494313 His mother? Didn’t Joyce’s relationship with his mother mirror that of Stephen’s relationship?

But that’s where I get confused: if Stephen is an autobiographical version of Joyce, why introduce the man in the macintosh as another version of himself?

Maybe the man in the macintosh is the version of Joyce he aspired to be? Joyce was reported to have schizophrenia, so the man in the macintosh could be the other part of Joyce in opposition to Stephen?

Just throwing thoughts out into the universe!!

494313 Only finished chapter 1 so far, and I agree the jokes went over my head. In the appendix of my edition, there is a table of connections and themes throughout the book, and themes in correspondence with The Odyssey. I found myself constantly referencing the table to help make connections.
