44487 Yeah, I would agree, quite dark in some stories with a sense of something sinister lurking just out of our field of perception, as though we are dancing right on the edge of some terrible world we're not aware of.

I enjoyed the Case of Charles Dexter Ward myself. The Dunwich Horror was good too.

44487 Ok, I did some more looking and I think I've found the definitive story from what I consider a legitimate source, the New Yorker Magazine. Appears legit and seems to be the same news as I've read elswhere on the net. "At the Mountains of Madness" will apparently NOT be made. At least not by Universal. Hopefully, another movie company will be interested. If interested, I'm including the link to the story below, it is a good article:

44487 Yeah, I understand the Dunwich Horror (with Dean Stockwell from Quantum Leap) was quite bad. The Re-Animator wasn't bad. The sequel was ok, past that, they really got bad.

44487 I have heard for a couple two or three years that Guillermo Del Torro was going to do "At the Mountains of Madness" and that he really wanted to do it as he's a big Lovecraft Fan. I did a search recently for it on IMDB, and then a general search. From what I found, who knows if it's a reliable source or not, it appears as though Universal is not willing to make the movie now because 1). it would likely be rated R, and 2). it would require a substantial budget and they're not willing to put out for that. So I'm wondering, have any of you seen, read or heard anything similar about the possibility of doing a movie?

44487 I like the Cthulhu crossing sign. Pretty funny!

44487 Hey thanks man, glad there's folks out there that like Lovecraft too. I've only ever read a couple or so of his stories including Strange Case of Charles Dexter Ward, The Dunwich Horror (which I hear is an atrocious '70's movie with Dean Stockwell), and At the Mountains of Madness. Yeah, I hope Del Torror makes it. I know he's a huge fan of Lovecraft and I think he's the genius to pull off a Lovecraft story and do it justice.

44487 Well, never read anything by Clive Barker per se. However, did see the Hell Raiser movie (a couple of them actually) and they were ok. Interesting concept. Did see the movie "the midnight meat train" based on one of his stories if I remember right. That was pretty good. Do have his "books of blood", but they are still on my "to read" agenda.

44487 I think Lovecraft was really far advanced for his time. I have often heard that either he, or someone in his family, had a mental illness (Schizophrenia if I remember right) and that some of that (in terms of the audio/visual hallucinations and paranoia) was the inspiration/basis for some of his stories. I've tried to track this down, but have yet to find something conclusive about it, although it would be interesting as I work in the mental health field. Definitly, Lovecraft has some great, original stuff!

I enjoyed "The Dark Half" in terms of the dual nature of man/woman. Kind of reminded me of Jekyl and Hyde.

44487 I have heard that Guillermo Del Torro will make "in the mountains of Madness" into a movie. I think if anyone can do it, Del Torro can. The creatures he created for his Hellboy films just seem to have the right fit with Lovecraft's ideas. Anyone else have a thought on this? I hear it will be a few more years yet, before he gets to making "madness", but, I have read, and seen interviews where he really likes Lovecraft.

44487 I think Stephen King is great. Having read his earlier work and having read some of his more modern day stuff (last 5 years), I can definitly see his maturity as a writer from one of just gross horror/terror to more of mind terror and situational terror. More Psychological now than before I think.
