439228 I do have a slightly elevated temperature at all times. But I still think the sun wins in that contest.
In other news, I’m not sure which of my creatures to blame for this but my dog and one of my cats have apparently decided that 3 AM is the appropriate time to want to go outside. Which means I’m outside with both of them on leashes well they poke their noses into things. In a bright blue trenchcoat no less.

439228 I reread this recently after having read it for the first time as a teenager and I will say that the experience of reading it as an adult is a completely different one than that of reading it as a kid. As a kid I was really struck by all of the paranormal elements. But coming back to it as an adult I am much more affected by all the real-life horrors in this book. There is just so much more grieving in this book than I remembered.

439228 I read this not too long ago and liked it much more than I expected to. Usually, hard SF is not my favorite science fiction subgenre. But this had so much more humor than I expected it to have and the science was explained in a way that made it understandable for me as someone who sometimes gets bored with too much of the technical. I haven’t seen the movie so I don’t know how the book compares to it but I actually want to see the movie now which is saying something.
Also, duct tape deserves that much praise.

439228 OK, cool. Then I’ll nominate wide Sargasso Sea.
May 04, 2019 04:18PM

439228 I’ll second that nomination. Also, and forgive me if this has been answered somewhere else and I am just missing it, how are we defining a classic? What’s the age cut off point or are we using some other metric?

439228 I think there are a few different religions that have beliefs about photographs though most of them are more concerned with Soul stealing or idolatry than with the loss of memories. I think the obvious parallel or inspiration is Alzheimer’s but I’m not sure exactly how that fits in with the story.
“Aloft” is probably the story I liked least of the whole collection though I still thought it was pretty good. It definitely had a more sci-fi/character study feel than the other three. But I wonder if I were someone who had a fear of heights whether I’d have been more disturbed reading it.
“Loaded” and “rain” we’re about tied for the position of my two favorite stories. I also noticed that they were the most political in the collection. That probably says more about me than it does about the stories them selves. And they both had some similarities to his dad’s work but I felt like they were different enough that the similarities didn’t bother me.

439228 I finished the first novel and I liked the beginning more than the ending. The ending felt a little bit too much like his dad’s work. I did like the Lovecraftian elements though. The whole idea of this malevolent intelligence urging the creation of computers.

439228 I started this today and I am so far really enjoying it. After reading Nos4a2 i’m excited to see what else hill has to offer.

439228 I’ll second the hundred thousand kingdoms and nominate Hounded Written by Kevin Hearne it’s a really fun start to a series and one I’ve been meaning to re-read. Plus, there’s an adorable talking dog and I am totally a sucker for such things.

439228 I just finished reading this and absolutely loved it. I loved the playing with the idea of what is really horrifying that happened in the stories.
Apr 06, 2019 07:59PM

439228 Finished. There are things that this second book had that I wanted in the first book and so I was pleased to get them here. But I felt like there was much less development of the primary couple in this book as compared to the first one. Which is sort of disappointing because I actually think that there was more potential for development here then there was, at least on the surface, for the last book.

439228 I am starting this book today.

439228 I got about halfway through today, it’s really good. Since I read this right after reading the shining I noticed how much SKs writing style has changed over the course of his career.
Mar 31, 2019 05:17AM

439228 I started today. Finished re-reading the shining first so that’s still really fresh for me and I read Nos4a2 just a few days ago so it’ll be interesting as I am reading to see which things I pick up.

439228 I’ve heard about the potential series 4 Nos4a2 but I didn’t know they were doing a doctor sleep movie. I’ll definitely be checking both of them out though and maybe dragging my partners along, at least one of them will never read the books.
Mar 28, 2019 10:30AM

439228 I actually just finished reading Nos4a2 A few days ago which is why I am particularly excited about re-reading the shining and reading this in the next few days. I am also interested in reading strange weather at least in part because I’d like to see if there are any other references to Stephen kings work in his sons books.

439228 I have chronic migraines so I’m sort of used to them. You just drug yourself into unconsciousness until it’s over. In a zombie apocalypse, I’ll be the girl raiding pharmacies for Maxalt.

439228 I’ve been fortunate to avoid pollen issues. So, I’m getting back into the habit of spending mornings in the garden. Afternoons are too hot and I can’t be outside for too long I get migraines.

439228 So how is everyone? I did my taxes last week. It was sad. And now I am trapped on my couch because my cat is using my lap as her bed.

439228 I read the flowers in the attic series as a teenager, and I’m not sure that I remember viewing any of it as horror. I think I just read it because it was sold as a sex book and at around 12 or 13 I wanted it to read all of the sex books, I read the beauty series and the story of O at around the same time. I really had no parental supervision. Right now, I am reading the fourth book in the iron seas series by Miljean Brook, which I am quite enjoying. For anyone who’d like to read this series I’ll warn you that the first book is awful. It gets better. Also, 2666 which I really want to like and I am really hating. I’ll finish it because I am pathologically in capable of not finishing a book but I’ll probably do my best to erase it from my memory very shortly afterwards.
