Adele, I have an iPad and do enjoy reading on it. I also have a Kindle Touch that I like as well. I tend to use the iPad when reading at night - black background with white print, and I use the Kindle during the day. the prices have fallen for the various Kindles and there are often deals for refurbished Kindles on amazon.

This is a good suggestion. I think for an 8 year old, keeping the price low is a good idea. It will hurt less when something happens to it.

One of the really nice things about e-readers is the ability to select the font and font size that works best for you. For LED based e-readers you can select page and work color that makes the viewing optimal. I use an iPad and at night often use a black background with white letter for reading in the dark or dim light.
