It's bedtime over here in Scotland, but thought I'd chime in to answer the question that has popped up a few times already. This tale takes place a few generations before the events of They Mostly Come Out At Night. Without giving spoilers, because of the events of the novel (as Timy has realised), this Magpie King isn't any of the people claiming the title in that book. However, this isn't the first Magpie King either, as the folktales from back then tend to be the weirder ones (giant squirrels eating the sun, etc.).
So, the short version: this story is a few generations before Mostly, but not too far back :)
As a consequence, however, Felton and Tad's tale ends here.
I'll jump back into the thread in the morning if there are any other questions. Glad people are enjoying it so far!
Just finished the story, and really enjoyed it - almost like a fantasy version of the X-Men, gathering teenagers displaying new powers to protect a world that hates and fears them, etc. etc. Actually REALLY reminds me of a middle school book I enjoyed as a young teenager - Blade of the Poisoner by Douglas Hill. Very similar set up, with considerably less brutal deaths on screen :pHere are some of my favourite bits:
His face was hidden, but through the bloody gap in his skull, I saw more of him than I had ever seen.
‘Homes travel with a person. They are not one place forever, girl.’

I'm posting this one a bit early as I'll be away from my computer this weekend, and Goodreads Groups hates mobiles. As before, spoilers are welcome, feel free to post your thoughts on the tale after 4th Feb if you come to the Readalong late, feel free to ask any questions :)
And so it begins! This thread is for Ben's book, our first stop on the old Readalong. We'll be hitting this book on Saturday 3rd, but feel free to post here afterwards if you get to the party a bit late.
Feel free to reply here with your thoughts after reading the story. Spoilers are fine, as this is for people who have finished the tale already. I'm pretty sure Ben will also be floating around if anyone has any questions for him...
Whoa, hi to all the newcomers - great to see so many familiar faces! (Vinca - loving Breath of the Wild right now too! And Joe, thanks for the shoutout :)
One week to go! This’ll be my first time involved in something like this on Goodreads, so I’m genuinely excited to see how the readalong goes…
The Lost Lore Readalong is just over a week away! In anticipation, here is our schedule for the stories in the collection. So many of them! I love the idea of being the first to discover new stuff, so I can't wait to see what Jeffrey Hall (debuted only last month) and Mike Shel (yet to debut!) have got in store for us :)
