Come on. There is no need for that sort of language.

You may not agree with Audible's over-generous return policy and people using it, but Jan is legally entitled to use it. As is any other person.

I, personally, think that Audible shouldn't allow returns after a certain point (perhaps 25% read) or if Audible want to continue accepting returns after that point then Audible should still pay the authors and take the hit themselves.

As for the secondhand eBooks. I don't really care about reselling, but I wish there was an easier and legal way to lend or give them to someone else.

Amazon does have a lend option, but it is limited to very few books and is also not available in most non-US markets (like Australia)

4170 Thanks, I'd forgotten about Standard eBooks.

I've got free books from them before. They do a nice job.

Time to check out their catalogue.

4170 I'm sure Trike won't mind. Here is a single image with both word grid and word list that will work on an iPad

4170 All Jules Verne's works are Public Domain. He died in 1905.

Many are free on Project Gutenberg.

I'm the opposite way around. Only Mac at home. Only windows at any place I've worked.

I always feel like I'm slumming when I use a PC 😉

I don't game on a Mac or do anything processor intensive, so my computing needs are, more than likely, less reliant on hardware than yours.

I only game on my XBone. I always have 1 or 2 games on the go.

A comedic look at the year we all want to end through the eyes of the worst-informed commentators you'll ever meet. From the creators of "Black Mirror."

4170 I made it to the end and while it is a hard slog at times with depressing and brutal scenes, I did love it and give it 4 Stars.

I moved straight into Parable of the Talents

I laughed when in Chapter 1 of PotT I read a quote from the extreme far-right Presidential candidate who wants his supporters to help us to to "Make America Great Again"

Octavia wrote that over 18 years before Trump made it his catchphrase.

4170 Ruth (tilltab) Ashworth wrote: "When I was little, I used to think boxing matches took place on boxing day, and that was where the name came from."

With the amount of alcohol drunk at extended family barbecues, I'm guessing a few backyard boxing matches take place in Oz on Boxing Day 😉

The chain of negatives in there made my brain cross... :)"

I had to re-read that several times to make sure I had it right. I'm still not 100% sure 😉

Trike wrote: "Yeah, but you’re darkness personified and you live on an island surrounded by ice sharks and inhabited by actual devils. Your standards are different from humans."

I've never been more glad than this year, that I live in a remote mountain town, on a small-ish island, in a country surrounded by vast oceans.

Devils are actually cute, but they scare the bejesus out of you when you hear their screams in the middle of the night, if you camp near them.

4170 The same could have been said about Black Leopard, Red Wolf. That was way more controversial and darker than PotS

Brea acknowledged that a lot of people aren't ready for this and both her and Tom expect some people will choose not to read it.

But we shouldn't not pick books that people don't want to read, yet. Put it aside and read it when life returns to normal.

We have had a few lighter books in the recent picks. So something a little darker is appropriate. Personally, I'm up for as dark as the hosts want to go, but that's me.

4170 No he's an idiot 😉

I joke. I have committed worse. It is strange when you say a word that you've only ever read for the first time and someone (usually your most sarcastic and vitriolic friend or family member) points out your error.

It is grating when it is in an audiobook and they keep using that same wrong word. It pulls me out of the story.

I forgive American narrators. It's a weird linguistic cultural thang 😉

4170 I don't think we got a definitive Yay or Nay. But are we doing Finding Baba Yaga: A Short Novel in Verse by Jane Yolen as an official alt pick?

John (Nevets) wrote: "Hey I’ve heard of that race. But for the life of me, I don’t remember why, or context. Besides when the occasional America’s Cup is run, I really don’t follow Yacht racing. Although I do find it fa..."

It is the only yacht race aussies take an interest in each year. Mainly because it starts in the spectacular Sydney harbour on Boxing Day. Families picnic along the shoreline and watch the start.

It is huge for my state as it finishes in Tassie's capital Hobart and the boats are the backdrop to Tassie's biggest New Year's Eve celebrations which are held on the docks.

4170 Trike wrote: "If ever there were a “read the room” moment that was obvious to everyone, 2020 is it."

Brea did explain her reasons pretty well in today's podcast. She was in the same head space as the rest of you earlier in the year and is now ready for something darker. Not everyone is there yet and may not be for a while.

Hopefully 2021 will be better for you guys.

An alternate read of Finding Baba Yaga: A Short Novel in Verse by Jane Yolen was suggested for those who choose to miss PotS

4170 Boxing Day isn't just a British holiday, it is also a holiday in many countries of the British Commonwealth (existing and former) i.e Australia, New Zealand, Canada, South Africa etc

It is arguably bigger than Xmas in Australia. Xmas Day is traditionally just for immediate family, but Boxing Day is our equivalent of Thanksgiving. It's when you get friends and extended family over for a family feast (which is usually a barbecue outside. Being Summer here after all)

It is also the biggest shopping day in Oz as well (our equivalent of the US' Black Friday. Which we also have) All major shops have their biggest sales to get rid of excess Xmas leftover merchandise.

It is also the start of 2 of Australia biggest sporting events. The Boxing Day Test (Cricket) and The Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race.

I'm sure one of us can help Brad out (if he wants) I have the mobi Kindle version.

4170 From the November thread:
Tassie Dave wrote: "The audible exclusive book that annoys me is Mount Fitz Roy by Scott Sigler which comes out on Thursday."

Colin wrote: Not sure about Aussie pricing, but you could take out a month-by-month subscription and then cancel again after getting the one book? That would surely get it under your $30 mark.."

Good suggestion. A 1 month subscription will cost au$16.95. But it worked out better than that.

Even though I have had an Audible subscription before and used the same sign-up details, Audible offered me the first month/credit free 😃
