Brilliant book. Nuff said."

It's funny, because reading this book in public places was the only time I've had complete strangers walk up to me (or past me) and comment on how much they love the book. I've never had a book as a conversation starter with random people before! It was kinda cool.

That's probably pretty accurate. I still find myself occasionally thinking about this book. :)

Good job finishing it. Feels like you accomplished something important, doesn't it? :) I'm glad the book was less brutal for you than it could have been. And you're wanting to do research on it now! That's great! I wish every book I read made me want to go do some research after finishing it.

Definitely don't be quiet now! Haha, A lot of people may have already finished it by now, and a lot of people may have read it already and are simply deciding on when/if to enter the discussions. I actually found a few different people currently reading it, so you're not alone. :)

I personally have a problematic relationship with Dickens' work, and fluctuate in my opinions of him. I liked the storming of the Bastille part, but I think I liked it more because of the history of it, rather than Dickens' writing. I pretty much enjoyed all the parts that portrayed all the major historical events, but didn't care for, well... most of everything else.

I think like Les Misèrables, hanging in there with this book is definitely the way to go if you hope to make it to the end. :)

Haha! Good luck with the library book crunch. :) Definitely try out The Book Thief; A lot of people seem to love it. I look forward to your thoughts on it, once you manage to start!

40760 Dickens can be a tough nut to crack, but his supporters claim it is worth all effort once you chew on his filling.

I wonder how accessible people are finding this book.

40760 For those reading it/have read it, I'm wondering: do you feel that having Death as a narrator brings you closer to the drama, or keep you removed, and at a distance?

It seems the point of view from Death can either bring you right up, closer to the characters, or it can sort of dehumanize them but making the reader look through a filter.

40760 Discussion for The Book Thief.

As this is a book that has been read before (sorry, it slipped by me during nominations, but we'll just go with it for this month), here is the discussion thread for the first time it was read, for reference: http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/9...

Abso-friggin-lutely! Paper books all the way.

TPBM prefers black tea over green tea.

I saw it in regular, and I enjoyed it. Though, I have a tendency to prefer regular over 3-D. 3-D seems to make my head hurt. :)

Like I said, I think giving their own opinions was exactly what they have been doing; I don't see that anyone has banded together to pick on you. You thought it was preachy, and nobody has picked on you for thinking that. Others have simply said they didn't think it was. I hope others are allowed to hold different opinions of the book as you, without being accused of picking on you.

I don't think anybody was trying to jump on you, or have a go at you. I honestly think others have just tried to add their two cents about what they thought of the book. You thought it was preachy, which is absolutely fine. I think other people have simply said that they didn't find it to be so. I really don't think anybody was trying to attack you for your opinion; sorry you saw it that way.

I find that a lot of people have different opinions/interpretations on what the message actually is. It will be interesting to see if the group varies in reactions and conclusions throughout the course of reading.
