40475 Whoa, Brian R. I'm rabbit-trailing this thread a minute. I just want to put in that I LOVE go and it's the only game I play.

I wish I had a go bookshelf. Unfortunately it'd only have like... 3 books.

40475 : ) Thanks. : )

40475 Jason said, "alright, so above, i see two prevailing views.

- reviews as book reports,
- reviews as blogs

a lot of flack above for being forced into two buckets. i propose a third bucket.

- masturbatory reviews

...is there a fourth"

I think that was message 47 or so.

I tend to see reviews more as a written book club dialogue. If you were at a book club, what would you talk about if you were discussing it? Maybe it's anecdotal, maybe it relates to the book, maybe just been thinking about cats the whole time you were reading it. I'm not talking bloggin randomness... I'm talking book club randomness.

Also, I just inserted my first pictures into a review. Go me.

40475 I shelve by what I would look for, and what I think others would look for.

Also, book club books, audio books, and books I've read aloud... so I can remember.
40475 every book i read. and i'm a book finisher.

40475 I would bet that if we're all psychos on here that would make us normal, right?
40475 Man, there are a lot of great ideas on here.

I write the reviews so I can go back later and see what i thought about the book. HOWEVER, I am a VPW.

Sometimes I'll think, "I really liked/loved that book," then go see what I gave it and see that I only gave it a 2 or 3 star rating. Was I wrong then, or am I wrong now? It's helped me see that some books have staying power, you know?

Here is my (lame) whoring technique. If I'm having a good week - 20 likes or so - I'll ask my wife who has an account but is a GRINO (Goodreader in name only) if she'll have time to go on and like the reviews of the 20/30 books I've read in the last 2 months (or however long it's been since she's last legitimately been on goodreads reading reviews) that she actually likes. She likes (or says she does) most of them, but never really votes for them.

That's gotten me a "best reviewer of the week" a couple of times. It's lame, and cheap, and I'm ashamed, and I'll (probably) never do it again.

Really, I wouldn't if she'd just get on goodreads in earnest.

Yes, but that was a pretty stellar review of Twilight if I remember correctly... YA and romance.

40475 Sheesh... I'm coming into this group way too late. Everybody's already given every brilliant answer possible to this question.

I spend way, WAY too much time writing reviews. Reviews few/nobody read. So, I write them more for myself than anybody else... although I too love it when they're liked.

Reviews are a creative outlet that help me think through issues in the books.

I love reviews that go off-topic, but stick to the heart of the book. I click the "like" button if I like the review, or if I like the amount of work someone put into the review.

Am I a vote whore? Yes. But I'm not a very good one.
