A Friend Indeed
The memory from the first day of seventh grade will never fade from my mind. That was the day I met Willow. She became one of my best friends in no time at all. Kiele is like a role model to me; even though she had to move, her memory lives on in my life. I hope I see her someday when, hopefully, she moves back here.
Willow is about as tall as I am, somewhere around five feet. She had shoulder length pale blonde hair, disturbed by the wire that runs from her cochlear implant to her hearing aid. Willow looks neat in pale pink Converse, jeans, and a semi-dressy plaid shirt. She wears rectangular glasses, and she has a black plastic microphone to help her hear what people say. Overall, Willow was one the best dressed students last year.
Willow loves both horses and cats; this was evident before she even told me because of her obsession with horse shirts and books. Also, she was never seen without her trusty Warriors books. Our natural attraction lies in our mutual respect for all animals and humans; we both love animals and try to be gracious and patient with humans. She is easy for me to work with because of this. Willow is always so nice to people, it amazes me; the only time I’ve ever seen her get mad at someone was her two younger siblings. She’s deaf, so when sometimes she doesn’t quite catch what the teacher said, she would ask politely for her to repeat herself, and she’s not afraid to ask for help. If she understood something that I didn’t, she always helped me out.
August 18, 2009, I walked into the school slightly depressed because my two best friends from the year before had moved to Germany. I thought that for the whole year I would have a hole in my life. How I was wrong. My life last year was more complete than sixth grade because of one welcoming smile from Willow. Our science teacher had arranged out seats in alphabetical order, so we were science partners. After getting our textbooks, we were supposed to cover them with brown paper bags, but Willow couldn’t seem to figure it out. She gave me a shy smile and asked me for help. I showed her the way to do it, and we decorated our books together and chatted. From then on, we always worked together, in every class, and our friendship bloomed.
Through the whole year, we never argued on anything, we had so much in common! Willow is a lot like me in some ways, but she is also a very unique person. Her extraordinary personality has taught me so much! I miss her now that she has moved, but she still influences me through email. It just goes to show that if you are kind and include other people, you can make a huge impact on someone’s life.
