36089 The Series of Unfortunate Events is a really good series. I highly enjoyed them.

36089 I don't even know who I would I be haha!

36089 Is it okay? I liked her fairy stories (Tithe, Valiant, and Ironside) because they were darker so maybe I should pick that up. I did not like the Spiderwick chronicles though...just couldn't get into them.

36089 It's holly black right? There's no explaining what she does.

36089 ...find the Book of Secrets that would allow me to...

36089 So would Harry Potter be considered a classic eventually? Every generation of people love the books...it'll be interesting to see if they last and stand the test of time. Can a fantasy series be considered a "classic" at all?

36089 It would be hard to corrupt me any farther than I already am ;)

Jeanne has a point though, I'm exhausted when it comes to classics right now. You know how you go through lots of ONE kind of book and then you need a new genre? Thats kind of where I'm at. I think the classics are great but in masse...they become a hastle at times.

My birthday is December 10 :)

36089 Haha, I'll have to check that book out sometime. Naughty doesn't really phase me since I read mostly adult-oriented books and pretty much nothing surprises me anymore.

I do feel a little crammed with classics and we actually do discuss a lot of those books. We don't take time to read them in class, we only discuss in class and don't do much else but take a test. A lot of those were read of the summer so it really hasn't been TOO bad but after a while all I want to do it pick up Harry Potter :P

Speaking of Harry Potter...my dog came into my room while i was in the living room and ate part of the binding on Deathly Hallows that was sitting on my nightstand (I'm re-reading it for the movie)...I'm saddened right now D:

36089 We read nothing but classics. We just finished Othello, Macbeth, Beowulf. We've read Pride & Prejudice, Sense & Sensibility, Dr. Zhivago, Emma, A Thousand Splendid Suns (not really a classic but its AMAZING!), Frankenstein. That's just so far. We have 4 weeks left.

36089 I think any book can be talked about in class. The schools are trying to keep things from the kids, to corrupt us less, but we already know. We need a place to talk about it and where better than school? Books like Speak, 13 Reasons Why and even fantasy books are great for analyzing.

The classics are great to an extent but I think its time schools moved toward more contemporary authors and novels in order to 1. Make literature more appealing to students and 2. Make what we're reading more current to today.

Hope that made sense...

36089 The Maze Runner has been compared to the Hunger Games and has been called "ground-breaking" and "gripping". The POV is from a teenage boy rather than a girl so its different than most YA fiction (different audiences, different voice, etc.).

Thoughts?

36089 I haven't read it but I have heard great things. I just reserved the copy of it at my local library.

On the topic of banning, though I haven't read it, I don't think any book should be banned and I find it strange that any book can be banned since we have the 1st amendment in the Bill of Rights...

36089 The obvious dystopian series of choice for most people. Amazing messages, memorable characters, intriguing plot, terrifyingly possible world...what more could one ask for from a dystopian trilogy?

Thoughts?

36089 I actually didn't like the Maze Runner. The slang really bugged me and the characters didn't grab me at all and I don't feel any anticipation to grab the Scorched Trials either. It was a let down for me. YA is seriously lacking in interesting, realistic male POVs...its annoying.

I never liked Inkheart either...don't know why. I like Funke's writing style too because the book The Thief Lord is one of my favorites so Inkheart has always been a mystery to me.

36089 I've read all three books and it reminded of Star Wars with Dragons but I really enjoyed them.

36089 Me? I'm on here kind of sporadically but anytime after 330 central to midnight during the week I'll periodically hop online haha

36089 Oh, my bad Nasuesue! No problem :)

36089 I'm just slowly making updates to the group, slowly turning into a YA book club but that's definitely a good idea for marketing Unlocked Jeanne!
