I started a Dorothy Dunnett before TT that I want to pick back up. The Agatha Christie short stories should also help. There is hope!Think a week off work with one child back at school and us all getting back into a routine will probably also make a difference.
That’s v handy. My reading has ground to a standstill. Really hoping I pick up something soon that kickstarts me again
I’m giving turf wars a miss this year but for everyone taking part - have fun!Mods are thinking about what comes next so keep an eye on the newsletter. We all feel like a small break in organising is needed before the next one kicks off.
I’d hoped to squeeze in another read, but camping has been more full on than planned so it’s half read. Thanks everyone for all the awesome reading and Mel for some impressive cheese reaction times!
Fingers crossed that interest in viewings turns into bids nicely for you. Glad that the Scottish system for completions is more sensible than the English one so that you can get somewhere reasonably smoothly in the new year.
I’m not planning to take part in Turf Wars so I’ll see what I’ve got unless someone has one on the go for the last week of TT.
It’s not the same as the original and has moved closer to thriller territory. It was still v readable, but not the pinnacle that I remember the originals being when I last read them (which was over a decade ago).
Dropping below the line has pushed me to finally get on with some of the things on my list so I've finished:
This didn't feel balanced through the generations - it felt rushed towards the end especially after so much time had been spent with every detail of Kunta Kinte's life.
Still not as good as the original trilogy, but I'll probably finish this set of 3 off and then think about whether a third trilogy with another author for these characters is worth it.
Tomas and Tereza have come to spread their dubious take on love, but they are in favour of a short read.100 to 175
MC owns a dog
character is a waitress
communism important to plot
takes place in the 1960s and/or 1970s
Centaurs done! Now is it going to be another short one or is it sufficiently close to the end of TT to unlease a chunkster?
Andy - I am scared to take part in that event! Who knows what horrors would spoil my current love for cheese.Fiona - oh no! I hope the antibiotics kick in quickly, the painkillers become more effective and that you feel a whole load better very soon.
Rather than running downhill after a cheese, I’d propose a readathon for the last week! Speed reading as many pages as possible is much less likely to cause lasting damage.
Roots: The Saga of an American Family works for the page count. I’ll get it done by the end of TT one way or another.
The only fantasy of manners I can think of are the Austen books. Will see whether I can find an alternative.
