I've been born in Germany and even I think that the German language is difficult. Haven't spoken German for about 12 years though since we moved to Sweden in 2004.
If you're looking for Historical Fiction you should check out Ina Lorentz, Sabine Ebert or Wolfgang Hohlbein.
