10. So we are half way through the book. Thoughts and feelings? Loving it? Hating it? Ambivalent? I want more Dragons! These are the best scenes but the book in general is really compelling. I can see what the hype is about.
11. Jeremiah gets killed pretty quickly as his signet shows. Do you agree that power can't be allowed? This scene sure made me question the professors and the powers that be. What are they afraid of getting out?
11. What's the deal with Andarna? Why do you think 2 dragons have bonded with Violet
The two dragons must be connected in some way and I am betting that throughout this series she will need her connection with each of them to survive. And I especially adore Andarna! I think she mirrors Violet’s themes of small but mighty. However I seriously hate the “chosen one” trope and think these types of books can be done well without resorting to that….yet being the only one to bond with two dragons sure veers into “Chosen one” territory.
12. If you could choose a Signet what would it be?
Well I definitely don’t want to be able to read minds in this book world! I would have to go with mending. I’m not sure how I could use the others.
13. Were you surprised about Amber's betrayal? How about when Xanden completely believed Violet but Dain didn't? As a lover of Fantasy novels, I’m not going to be surprised by much so I wasn’t here. But Dain just turned into my least fave romantic interest ever.

6. This section starts with two scenes with each of the male love/lust interests. The comparison of them continues very clearly. Do you like Xaden or Dain better or neither?
I’m not impressed with either. Xaden has something going on for sure that is secretive and Dain is just too in Violet’s business. He reminds me of the overly possessive guys who want to dictate what their significant others do and think. Jeez just let her live.
7. Violet uses alternative methods to survive the fighting challenges. Do you think that counts as cheating or using the resources available? Do you think she is aware that she only has this information because she comes from a privileged background and her sister count sneak in it? Do you think one of the professors should have noticed after 5 rounds?
With the stakes being as high as they are in this competition, I think she needs to use everything she can and she is obviously using her brain to make up for her smaller stature and physical condition. It was glaring to me that the professors should have picked up on what was happening so I think we have to assume they didn’t care rather than didn’t notice because otherwise it just feels like a missing plot point.
8. The obstacle course is straight out of American Ninja warrior (and other similar TV shows) including ending with the giant ramp. Did you enjoy this section and how Violet figured out working with her height limitations? Have they told us how tall she is? (Though in real life, the shortest person to make it up the wall has only been 5’1” – I just Googled it).
I just thought this was a fun scene to read and again, she uses what she has available to her, mostly her brain to figure out how to survive.
9. Finally, we meet the dragons. Was it all you were hoping for? Did anyone guess the black one when it was first introduced in this section? (Also, I am not taking the fall seriously at the end of my section since we still have 2/3 of the book to go).
I really liked the scene of meeting the dragons. I could really see them walking through the dragons being stared at by them and having to act nonchalant and saying things that would hopefully get the dragon’s positive notice.
Bonus: So this may not count as its not an actual Dragon, but Abraxos, the Wyvern belonging to Manon Blackbeak from the Throne of Glass series is one of my favorite creatures from any media. I love him, I love Manon and I love their storyline. (I will die on the hill that Throne of Glass is a better series than Court of Thorns and Roses although I did enjoy both)

1. As someone who grew up with the Pern books, I love diving back into a world with dragons and dragon riders. And this one has extra bonus Gryphons, apparently!
Do you have any first impressions of the main characters (Violet, Dain, Rhiannon, Xader) and the world building? Do you want to know more?
I definitely want to know more about everyone. Whats their backgrounds and how do they end up wanting to be dragon riders?
2. What do you think of Violet’s mother and sister? Any idea about why her mother chose to order her to the Rider Quadrant instead of the Scribe Quadrant?
I like nothing about the mother yet. She would have to some real serious backstory to make me have any compassion for her at this point. They way she treats and talks to Violet is just awful.
3. The brutality of the selection process and the casual acceptance of murder is something else. What do you think the purpose of it is? (If there is one beyond societal norms.)
Would you have given your boot to a stranger?
This seems very brutal! I understand testing everyone to see if they have what it takes to be able to make it as a Dragon Rider but giving them no way out if they can’t do it or freeze up seems unnecessarily evil. I would hope I would give a boot to a stranger but its one of those things you probably won’t know until you are in the thick of it.
4. So this is a world at war, but at the battle briefings at least, they don’t seem to know why the outer provinces are currently attacking the borders. Any ideas about why this is happening?
No real clues here at the early stages of the book but we know things aren’t on the up and up.
5. Do you think that Violet will survive and get chosen by a dragon? If so, any predictions on what kind?
I think its obvious that she will get chosen by the dragon simply because she’s the focus of this book. That would be a real twist if she didn’t 😊
