Thank you to whoever has added some mini info for me! I am meaning to get around to that, it’s just been crazy irl. I only read three books in the last week and a half. If you are in turfs with me , you will already know, but I got a new job after 17.5 years at my current place. It’s been a crazy period of celebration and excitement. I’m going to be helping people in my new role and it’s just such a rewarding prospect. And such a wonderful change from the last 17 years.

Thanks for checking, Judy. I thought there was something too, but I couldn’t find it, even with a word search. Illustrated, poetry, children’s all mentioned. I hope it works because it’s more like a book with recipes in it. It’s 310 pages with maybe 50 of those recipe pages, which is why I don’t want to get stuck in reading and it not count.

Kudos all around. Though I get a little sad when a series comes to an end, there is something so satisfying about finishing.

Finally made a bit of a dent in my tbr numbers. I only read three in all of September, so I feel I’ve made up for it. Might even get one more in before the year is out. A real mixed bag, but mostly really good reads that were worth the wait.

I love that y’all have chosen Juneteenth. As a Texan and a descendant of enslaved people, it is such a positive thing. I appreciate that for the international readers it’s quite specific. It’s even specific for Americans. It started as an unofficial celebration in the south (maybe even just in Texas) to commemorate the official end of slavery. So many people were still enslaved even after the Emancipation Proclamation, the news had to travel either by word of mouth from plantation to plantation or by Union soldiers. Obviously, the government and ruling class of the south did not recognise the proclamation, they were fighting to keep those people in chains and their pockets full. It took from January to June to for the news to reach Texas and it took several days for the news to spread throughout the state, which is why it’s called Juneteenth. Most enslaved people heard the news by mid June. Unfortunately, there was still a war happening so it didn’t mean enslaved people could down tools and request chains to be removed necessarily, but it did mean any black folks who got to free states or territories would no longer be returned because they were free. I won’t get into it too much because it’s long and complicated but free states and citizens had legal obligations to return slaves to their “rightful owners” or face legal action. Think the current situation with ICE in America but for black people. Any black person could be stopped by slave catchers and the onus would be on the individual to prove their right to be free and if they couldn’t, they could and sometimes would be shipped south for sale. Solomon Northrup wasn’t the only person this happened to. I could go on with modern day comparisons to the insanity happening right now, but suffice it to say the Proclamation put an end to this. Even though it started as a celebration in Black communities in the south of the United States, it is a celebration for all Americans. Who wouldn’t want to celebrate freedom from bondage for anyone?
We would celebrate with parties and bbqs in parks. So for those not familiar with the holiday, any summertime picnic party food or games would work, and any traditional southern foods would too imo. It is a celebration of independence, American-ness and Pan-African heritage. I will say we didn’t have official flags when I was growing up, that’s a fun new addition.

Unfortunately, I won’t get the Beauty Queen of Jerusalem finished. This is the second time I have tried to use it in a challenge and still not gotten around to it. The next set of Y letters, it will be the first book I read. 😒

Of course. The book is set in St Vincent and the two main characters go for a swim. There is a whole scene where he applies sunscreen to her whilst they are on a blanket on the beach. Then they run across the scorching sand into the warm water. I can find a timestamp and any relevant phrases if you want.


For boat trip - they take a small boat out to a larger diving vessel. The FMC’s family own a treasure/salvage diving business.

I have 1 more book to read for this round. Luckily, it’s a Y. I tried to add my books, but there’s a fair few of us on the as, so it’s going kind of weird. I’ll try to add tmz.

Juneteenth would be doable. Southern foods and locations, summer setting, any music associated with the south or Black folks would work gospel, soul, rap, jazz etc.


But Carnival/Mardi Gras would be fun too. Midsummer would be unique and interesting. My fave is St Paddy’s. Green, spring, leprechauns, parades, beer.

I’m down with any holiday, Xmas, Halloween, Diwali, Hanukkah, Easter, Juneteenth, St Paddy’s, whatever, I will celebrate and read. I just like to look party.
