35559 DISCUSSION QUESTIONS SET 1

1. ALTHOUGH THIS BOOK WAS ORIGINALLY PUBLISHED IN OCTOBER 2013 I WAS AMAZED WITH THE OPENING PAGES DESCRIBING THE CIRCLE'S CAMPUS IN LIGHT OF NEWS REPORTS THIS WEEK OF THE OPENING OF APPLE'S AMAZING NEW HEADQUARTERS! WHAT ARE YOUR EXPECTATIONS IN REGARDS TO THIS BOOK AND HOW MUCH OF WHAT HAS HAPPENED IN THE REAL LIFE TECH WORLD DO YOU THINK WILL INFLUENCE THE PLOT LINE OF THE STORY?
Going by genre, science fiction, I'm not expecting much current real world technology in this book. However, as we all know with our ever-evolving world of technology, this could one day be real world.

2. INITIAL IMPRESSIONS OF THE MAJOR CHARACTERS MAE AND ANNIE? DO YOU GET THE FEELING THAT THEIR RELATIONSHIP IS NOT AN EQUITABLE ONE AND HOW DO YOU THINK IT MAY CHANGE AS THE STORY PROGRESSES?
Initially, I think that Mae feels inferior to Annie. Annie is the "veteran" in the company that Mae has worked so hard to get into. I think their relationship with evolve throughout the story line, making them more equal.

3. DO YOU LIKE THE CONTINUING FORMAT OF THE NOVEL AND THE LACK OF DEFINED CHAPTERS? WHY TO YOU THINK DAVE EGGERS HAS WRITTEN THE BOOK THIS WAY?
I do not like that there aren't chapter breaks. I sometimes give myself a goal of so many chapters a day, where I know I will have a defined stopping point.

4. MAE AND FRANK? WHAT DO YOU THINK FRANK'S CONTRIBUTION TO THE STORY LINE WILL BE? DO YOU SEE ANY RELATIONSHIP EVOLVING BETWEEN THEM?
I think Mae and Frank will have a relationship. Just like with Annie, Mae looks up to Frank because of the work he has already done with the company.

5. BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU WISH FOR AND IF SOMETHING IS TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE IT PROBABLY IS ARE TWO SAYINGS THAT IMMEDIATELY SPRING TO MIND WHEN READING THIS BOOK. AT THIS EARLY STAGE WHERE ARE YOU IMAGINING THE STORY IS HEADING?
I do think some things are too good to be true. The story started off pretty slowly for me, I'm hoping that it picks up soon.

6. DOES THIS BOOK REMIND YOU OF ANY OTHERS YOU HAVE READ OR ARE YOU FINDING THE STORY FRESH AND
Having just finished Brave New World, I have found many similarities, such as 'control' and 'community' being at the forefront.

35559 So, another question about BOM. I'm just starting now, am I too late to the game to participate in discussion questions, since I didn't follow the reading for each day?

What did you think about [bookcover:The Shadow of the Wind
? I read it last summer for WOBBLE because my teammates loved it. I, on the otherhand, could not get into it at all. It took me FOREVER to read.

Just out of interest ;)

I joined for all of the above. I haven't ever played TT before, I find that doing the challenges makes me read more in the summer, I love meeting new book addicts like myself, who doesn't love book recommendations, and of course I love a good challenge. :)

I am Ashlee, from Pennsylvania USA. I am an elementary teacher and an Independent Consultant for a direct sales company. I enjoy reading just about anything. I am excited that I'll be able to clear out my bookshelf, as there doesn't seem to be many reading requirements.

35559 Thanks Elise, Melissa, and Cait. This was a challenge that definitely took up your time. Thanks for keeping it all organized.

Sorry that I tapped out in the final challenge....if mods are looking for suggestions, the final challenge was entirely took confusing to follow. Also, not very manageable for teams that weren't reading a book a day.

However, all in all, I really enjoyed this challenge. It got me to read out of my comfort zone and had me reading much more than usual.

Are we able to read whatever we want, or will there be specific reading requirements?
