35559 DQ 4&5 Feb
Chapters 6-11

7. Is it just my copy, or does everyone's edition have the messages between Kelvin and Jazz in different font styles? I wonder if it means anything?

The message font is different from the text of the book. I’m not sure if it means anything. The message font is bold but so is the pick up location in Jazz’s job (page 19 in the hardcover).

8. For those that have read The Martian, is Jazz reminding you of Mark Watney? I feel like Weir has written the same character personality. I understand there is a different gender, ethnicity and job, but the actual core character seems very similar!
I haven’t read The Martian; I saw the movie and all I remember is I didn’t like it.

9. Artemis only has 2000 residents. How did Jazz think she would go unnoticed? would you have taken on the challenge for a million slugs?
I went to a high school which only had 600 students. I knew my friends, people in my classes, and some students who I saw occasionally, but some students I didn’t see; so I’m assuming Artemis is similar.
It would be tempting but I wouldn’t take the challenge because I wouldn’t want to suffer the consequences of getting caught. It involves too much deception and secrecy, not to mention Rudy is watching to catch her doing something illegal and that she’s going to be the fall guy.

10. Oh. Interesting twist with the Administrator. Did you see it coming?
I had a feeling. Upon their first meeting she had too much info about Jazz. John Dalberg-Acton said, “Power tends to corrupt and absolute power corrupts absolutely.” I agree this is true with power and money. People with power and/or money believe rules don’t apply to them; that they can intimidate people with their power or buy their way out of trouble (at least that’s been my experience).

11. Thoughts or hopes for how this will all end?
No thoughts because there might be a another twist.
35559 Artemis Day 1 DQs Ch 1-5

1. Have you read other books by Andy Weir? Why did you decide to read this BOM?
I haven’t read any of his other books. I decided to read Artemis for a few reasons: it was on Goodreads “Best of 2017” lists, it sounded interesting and I like group reads.

2. What do you think of Jazz?
Jazz is a woman who knows her mind. She is a strong-willed, driven and intelligent woman who is not going to let anyone take advantage of her.

3. Do you like Weir’s writing style? Can you visualize Artemis clearly? His writing style is engaging, and I can picture what he’s writing about happening.

4. Are you enjoying the messages between Jazz and her pen pal Kelvin? Why do you think Weir put these in the book? Do you think they will ever meet?
I think the pen pal messages are to give us insight into Jazz’s history. I don’t think they’ll meet (view spoiler)

5. Any guesses as to what ZAFO means?
I don’t have a clue but I’m pretty sure it’s illegal.

6. What a cliffhanger at the end of chapter 5! What do you think will happen to Jazz now? Will she be caught or find a way out of this situation?
Jazz is resourceful; she’ll figure a way out.
35559 The waiting list at the library is too long so I bought Artemis yesterday. Looking forward to reading with the group.
