DQ: 18 May - Sugi and Chikako's Hotel for Pets & Between Friends

9) Considering Satoru seems to be quite perceptive overall, do you think he knew about Sugi’s less charitable feelings about him, both in the past and during this visit?
I think he knew. I had the feeling he was quite receptive.

10) So far, the chapters have all been combining Satoru and Nana’s journey with Satoru’s past with several other people, as well as their backgrounds. How do you feel about this interlude (chapter 3.5) focused entirely on the man and his cat? What does it add to the story?

I really enjoyed this part of the story. It was nice to her more from Nana.

11) For the first time, we got a hint of what’s going on with Satoru when the dog said “he smells like he isn’t going to make it” in chapter 3, and this came up again in chapter 3.5. So it sounds like Satoru is ill… was that your prediction for question 4?

No, but it makes sense.

12) Squabbles between cats and dogs were really present in these sections. So: Are you a cat person or a dog person or both (or neither)?

I'm a dog person. We only had 1 cat growing up , my sisters cat. He was a wild cat. He and I did not like each other. We had staring contests across the room and then I would chase him. ; ) . Looking back , I think he actually loved the game. Lol

5) I really like reading the cat's thoughts. It can be quite funny. Do you think these are convincing cat

I know my dog understands me so I think cats have similar thought processes.


6) In this chapter we are introduced to Yoshimine, another potential owner for our cat. What do you think of him and his backstory?

I found his backstory interesting. He is a survivor.

7) Do you think Yoshimine would have been a good owner for Nana ?

This is an interesting question. Is Nana just a pet or does he require more than room and board. I do think Yoshimine would take care of the cat and provide excellent care. However , He couldn’t provide extra attention and I am not sure Nana requires it. So it depends on what is meant by a good owner.


8) Yoshimine has already a kitten called Chatran, and Satoru makes fun of him for naming his cat with such a cliché name. What is for you the most cliché cat name(s)? In french it is quite common to call a cat Chaussette (meaning sock), Mistigri or Felix (actually a cat food brand).

Garfield is the only one I can think of.

Oh, and sorry . I am getting a late start to my reading, turns out having a 3 year old stay at your house if a bit time consuming. : )

16 May: Prologue - The Husband Without a Wife

1. How are you liking the way the story is written with its alternating POVs ? Is there a POV you prefer ?

I enjoy books that have different pov’s. I am really liking the cats pov , I like it when we know what an animal is thinking.

2. Through the flashbacks we get to know Satoru's personality a bit more. What do you make of him so far ? What did you think about his way of helping his friend Kosuke

I am still not clear of Satoru’s motivation. I do think he values Kosuke friendship.


3. Talking about Kosuke, what's up with his parents ? It seemed to me that Kosuke was genuinely convinced that his father would agree to keep the cat (Hachi). What did you think about his backstory ?

I feel like his parents are typical Japanese parents with high expectations.

4. Why do you think Satoru can't take care of Nana anymore ?
I have a feeling he is suicidal…. Giving away his possessions is a sign

How many questions do we have to answer to earn the 20 points. I am enjoying the book, but and not very good at analyzing and answering questions. Do we have to answer all 4 or 5 questions for each day???

The Harry Potter books are great audio books and they have an excellent narrator.

My Australian Shepard is 12 and really slowing down. The vet recommended cbd cookies for her. It has really helped , she doesn’t sleep all day now. I was starting to worry about her. I am loving all your dog stories 😀

Ashlee, I am having a blast. Just dive in, you will make mistakes but that is okay.
