35559 DQs Day 2 - Baneful-"My Own Wee Thing”

6. Jane gives Rochester a black-coloured thumb-sized stone to keep with him as a protective talisman. Do you believe in talismans? Please tell us about an object that you keep with you as a talisman?

I do believe in talismans although I don’t keep one with me. I think talismans give the wearer a sense of security and comfort which in itself is protection

7. Between some of the chapters narrated from Jane’s point of view, we get chapters from Rochester’s point of view. What do you think of these “interludes”? Do they help or distract?

I often read novels where this is a thing and find that more often than not they add to the storytelling

8. We are introduced to Dr. Poole. What did you think of this character particularly with regards to Jane meeting him in the poison garden? Were there any changes in your opinion after reading Agnes’ conversation with Jane about the late Mrs. Rochester?

I suspected he was a shady character and thought at first he was directly responsible for Mrs Rochester’s death.
9. We have been told several times about a curse on Thornfield. Then Jane follows Rochester to the graveyard where his family members are buried. At this point Jane says “This was a story of heartache. Everyone in Mr. Rochester’s family had died before their time, especially the females. Then his wife had done the same.” Do you think there is a connection between the curse and the early deaths?
I’ve already completed so know the answer to this, at this point I assumed there was a connection otherwise it would have been a mute plot point

10. We have been given information about Jane and her origin? What do you think of this twist in the tale?
I liked this twist and the fact that her mother is always with her is nice

Bonus: The author has used several of the same names as those of characters from Jane Eyre. Other than Jane, Rochester, we have Brocklehurst, Maria Temple, Mrs. Fairfax, Poole etc. What do you think about authors using the same names in retellings

I would expect it in a retelling

35559 Hi all not got much reading done this week even with having a week off. Planning to get some done tomorrow and update what I’ve read.
35559 DQs - Day 1 - Prologue-Blackthorn

1. A paranormal retelling?? of Jane Eyre - this prompts the question about the original or let's call it the "source for inspiration". What is your relationship to Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë? Have you read it? Loved/liked/disliked it?

I have read Jane Eyre many moons ago and enjoyed it, it’s not my favorite classic novel but it is enjoyable

2. What about Retellings? Is it a genre you like/avoid?

I do like retellings and have read quite a few

3. Jane Aire as a witch in a school for orphan witches? How do you like the setting of this alternative Victorian world where magic is at least tolerated?

I read quite a few Victorian/ steampunk novels and Magic/paranormal novels, so this worked for me

4. What are your first impressions of Jane and Rochester?
I like Jane although Rochester needs to be a little more airlines befitting a Victorian gentleman

5. What do you think about the occurrences in Thornfield? Are they really caused by supernatural elements or is it human action?
As it is a paranormal book I would think there is an element of the supernatural behind them

For text in book we would need the page/location if possible and short sentence . For other items, take a look at some of the examples on the sheet and in "msg 5 of this thread

35559 Day 5: Chapters 40 - 56

20. Cade goes to each of the other travellers and has final words with them. Do you think he learned any new information about his travellers? Or did he learn something about himself?

I think he understood them better

21. The journey to The Seven Brothers is full of many challenges. Did this journey remind you of any other quest you've read?

It is very similar to the LOTR and The Hobbit

22. We now find out about the Pandorals, how they were using The Seven Brothers as vessels. Quite interesting how this was accomplished. Did this surprise you how they were formed ? What did you think of why they came to acquire the red soil?

i finished this yesterday and I don’t remember red soil 🤦‍♀️

23. It was determined that Cade be the one to use the apparatus. What attunement do you think he chose?

I really don’t know and am not invested enough to find out

24. What was your overall impression of this story? What was your favorite part of the story? Will you read the next in the series or try one of the authors other series?

There were some funny parts but I wasn’t overly keen. Unless the next in the series is a BOM I won’t be reading it

1 point tasks
- Read a book with a orange cover
- "harvest" (plural OK, no other variants) in text
- Author initials in HERACLES
- Word in title is hiding a different smaller word (of at least four letters) inside it (not the singular form or verb tense differences) - examples LimonCELLO; THINg; wereWOLF (or indeed WEREwolf); HUNGer but NOT GAMEs (as that's the singular/plural)
- One of the following food words in text (plural OK, no other variants): corn, grape, ham, bread, cheese, apple, fish, chicken, bread, rice, tomato, pepper, salt, honey, lobster

3 point tasks
- Horn on cover (instrument or animal equally OK. but not antlers please)

Day 2 DQs
Ch 9 to 18

6.) Did Galass turning into a blood mage and Fidick being the cause of Lucian's death (I assume that's what the black cloud that left the tent did) surprise you? Or were you expecting their bit in the story to be over and just a footnote about Cade's character?

I can’t say I was surprised, I expected there to be death but wasn’t sure who it would be

7.) We learn about more magic types and there's pretty much any type of magic you can dream up. What type of magic you like to have or what animal would you like an affinity with?

I would prefer a healing magic. I would choose a Panther

8.) Is anyone else's favorite character Mr. Bones? Just me? mkay.

I don’t have a favorite at the moment

9.) At this point I think it's clear Cade is a fallen Glorian of some sort, likely a Justicar. Do others agree with my guess here or do you have other thoughts?

I think so too but could be completely wrong

10.) Assuming my guess in Q9 is right, why do you think Cade got the heave ho from the Glorians?

probably pissed someone off or did something that was a little bit “grey”
35559 I finished this a couple of days ago and it is still a 5* read for me. Again there were parts I’ld forgotten especially towards the end. I would love to read Haymitch’s story. I do believe that his drinking is a result of his own experience in the games and him having to relieve them as a mentor every year. Can’t wait to read the next one, going to finish the other BOM’s first though.
35559 I have just finished part 2 of this which has a lot going on. Thoroughly enjoying the reread of this, we see more of Katniss’ strength of character and her loyalty to protect those she takes under her wing. Although I’ve watched the film, may have to rewatch it to compare, the fact that we hear Katniss’ thoughts gives more depth to the story.
