35325 As an English reader, my answer is YES; the translation is valuable even though I know I am losing the nuanced reading of the original text. But I do gain from some of the quirks which come up in translation. For example: "not very nice things" is an un-English construction but perfectly captures Aaron Dushansky's awareness of his need to "become especially alert" as the train crossed Czechoslovakia (p.92.
