Welcome, Marina! What a good thesis you chose. Congratulations! I cannot help you about your need but I hope that someone can.

Maia is the singular form. Sauron, the Wizards, the Balrogs are the same "race", they are Maiar. But this not means that they have the same power. Sauron was a general of Melkor (that was the most powerful Vala), the most "close" to Eru Iluvatar.

Welcome, Robert!

Added it to my to-read shelf. But I guess that in Brazil it will be published one year, at least, after the original publishing date. But I want it published as soon as possible.

I read it and I liked. Is different when it is not all created by Tolkien, the tale is interesting and the information about the Kalevala was such a good reading.

Thank you, Michael. Me too.

I began to read it today. It seems to be an interesting reading.

Thank you for all the tips, Wastrel, I have
Curso de Quenya: A Mais Bela Língua dos Elfos and
Curso de Sindarin - Pedin Edhellen but have not read them yet. I read some websites about creation of languages years ago, 7 I guess so I almost creating I just have to begin.
The first link is from the course of quenya (there's no english edition in Goodreads) and the second one is a sindarin course. I ask in Gr librarians group to someone to combine them.

I will, someday...

Oh. Thank you for the explanation. I don't knew this expression.
The movies and my passion for languages. I want to create a language for no clear purpose, just for fun and I want to know how he uses the created languages in his book. I read it, love it, but never gone in my creating adventure, so far.

Thank you for your words, Anne.
What means "drew" in this case?

What a odd thing. I thought that I have introduced myself some posts above.
Hi all. I am Rafael from Brazil. English is not my mother tongue so if I make any mistakes I would appreciate if someone corrects me. I am 28 years old. I never know what to say about me. I have joined some months ago. I like read, listen to music, watch movies and series.
I am leftist and atheist.
I like fantasy like Tolkien (for sure), horror, science fiction, thrillers and historical fiction.

This book is so charming. A father that have such joy in write such charming book for his children is a beautiful thing.

I don't have any tattoos so far, but this thread give me some ideas.
Michael wrote: "Hyarrowen wrote: "I still can't quite understand why JRRT thought that an invented language must have an invented mythology..."
I've just read the Manuscript section, which reminded me of another,..."This is só poetical.

In other words, Tolkien thought that a language must reflect a culture. He once Said that this was the cause for esperanto had failed as an usable language. It has no background from a culture . It is a soulless language.

This is the second best story by Tolkien, only The Lord of the Rings is better. A mix of epic tale and drama. Every fan of Tolkien should read it.
Jonathan wrote: "It is a shame that some folks who read fantasy and science fiction are themselves incapable of thinking about a culture beyond their own experience, and ethical standards in a different world. Seek..."Good point. Tolkien really was catholic but he did Turin marry his sister (marry is a good word for what really happened). Again in Turin's story. When her mother was forced to marry with that guy who invaded their land. What doyou think that happened there? Tolkien was catholic? Yes he was, but be a religious person never avoid any act derived from human nature. Maybe elves was so conservative about sex, but expect the same from the edain is naive. The soldiers from christian reigns in Europe was very noble too,but this never avoid killings and rapes.

I agree that The Silmarillion would not work as a movie, but it could work as a series, done by bbc, netflix or hbo (they are just examples). As alot of special effects would be necessary, for me, animation is a better choice than live action. Del Toro could direct it, he know how to maintain the dark aspects of the book.
The narrator could be Morgan Freeman, if a british one it's a better choice so Liam Neeson, Ian Mckellen, Geoffrey Rush or Tilda Swinton would work as good choices.

I would love read about the southern and eastern races and men. This unknown world could be an interesting place.
