34959 I got an email this morning from Dennis telling me how the meeting went last night, at which point I slapped my forehead when I realized I had missed it. Turns out I probably would not have been able to go anyway, as it was a good friend's birthday yesterday.

I was disappointed to hear that most people didn't like Tortilla Flat. For Laura's sake, I wanted to let her know that I enjoyed the book quite a bit. I liked how each chapter was almost it's very own story and I liked the simplicity of the character's pleasures. I liked their own unique set of morals and how they developed those morals and then how they enforced their moral laws amongst the group. I loved Steinbeck's way of very simply and cleanly being able to describe a scene without sacrificing the imagery.

When I lived in the Caribbean for six months, I met many of Danny's friends and so I found this book to be very nostalgic of that simple and beautiful way of life, while also being frustrated with how much they drank, which is the exact same way I felt during my time on the island.

Also, from my time living in California, I felt that Steinbeck's portrayal of the environment in which they lived, to be absolutely spot on. While this wasn't my favorite book ever, I found it to be beautifully written and enjoyed my time within it's pages.

Thanks, Chelsie :-)
