50x66 Theodore Roethke’s citation, “In a dark time, the eye begins to see,...” can be interpreted that when things get extremely hard then the eyes will begin to see the truth. It is obvious that tough moments can be enlightening. Two historical text books that are related to this critical lens are “Narrative of Frederick Douglass” by himself and “Things Fall Apart” by Chinua Achebe.

The theme from Frederick Douglass book can be an relevant example of story that is related to this critical lens because slaves used to sneak out at night time to escape from slavery chain in the South. In fact, they were dehumanized by certain unalienable rights that God, the creator endowed to all human. Consequently, some slaves were caught to bring back to slavery. In addition those who reached north became autonomous. Above all slavery was the worst system that denied some ethnicity with certain rights and caused those people to struggle both day and night time for escaping from that ugly chain.

Okonkwo the main character in the story "Think Fall Apart" by Chinua Achebe can be another example of story that related to critical lens when he was denied to choose his own faith by the white missionary who settled in the village named Umofia.

Critical Lens: Theodore Roethke’s citation, “In a dark time, the eye begins to see,…”

Theodore Roethke’s citation, “In a dark time, the eye begins to see,…” can be interpreted that when things get extremely hard then the eyes will begin to see the truth. This critical is valid because tough moments can be enlightening. Two historical text books that are related to this critical lens are “Narrative of Frederick Douglass” by himself and “Things Fall Apart” by Chinua Achebe. These two stories exposed that how difficult time can aware of the unpleasant realities around us and important which we do not think about the happy moment.

The characters of “Narrative Frederick Douglass” can be a relevant example of story that is related to this critical lens. For instance, Frederick was a character who was beaten by his master named Covey as a slave in the southern of United States. Consequently, he struggled to find a way in order to get his freedom back. Furthermore, he learned how to read and write that finally gave him more knowledge and develops his understanding through slavery. Ultimately his accomplishment from the education had guided him very carefully and intellectually to gain his freedom back when he reached New York City. Similarly many other slaves used the strategies when they were being dehumanized or disempowered to become autonomous. In contrast, life in the south during 1800s was extremely hard in every circumstance of slaves. Therefore that obstacle had open many of them eyes to look forward for better life.

Okonkwo the main character in the story "Think Fall Apart" can be another example of story that related to critical lens when he was denied to choose his own faith by the white missionary who settled in the village named Umofia and altered the regulation. For instance, Okonkwo was a tough man in Umofia that finally leaded him to go into exile, after he acknowledged fundamental changes in the village. In fact, white colonists had change the regulation and converted from Islam to Christianity. Although people in the village were disempowered by the white colonists however, Okonkwo as a warrior abided their laws in many ways and ended his life because he could not live under this circumstance.

In conclusion, it is obvious that when things get hard ultimately eyes will realize the truth, as it was proven in the “Narrative Frederick Douglass” and “Things Fall Apart.” Even though both characters have faced different obstacle in their life time but it’s all about how their life have changes after facing those hardships. Both also have supported the critical lens in a path that is obvious.

50x66 Gnenerally Douglass story exposed the world how his humanity was disempowered as a slave in the Southern of United States. Therefore, he was voiceless who did not have any right to speech or even right to choose. Furthermore, he struggled on his own to learn independently in the street of Baltimore. For instance, After he was denied by his master in Baltimore to cease learning at home with his wife. Ultimately Douglass as a young boy started hang out secretly to learn from some white children in the street of Baltimore. Consequently the education that he gained from learning how to read and write had improved Douglass understanding more through humanity. Thus it showed him the way of escaping from slavery chain. Although Douglass was a slave who was denied with some unalienable rights of humanity however, he was the first slave in U.S history who learned how to read and write.
