We all have our problems, our issues that we leave unresolved and buried. Some of us bother to try and fix them, others may see no point. Sampson, he’s got his fair share of baggage packed up and stored, and he’s not looking to unpack and organize it anytime soon. There’s no point to it, not for him at least. He functions perfectly fine—well, relatively speaking. The words ‘impulsive’ and ‘self-endangering’ may have been tossed around a few times.
It isn’t that Sam has no regard for his own wellbeing...it’s just he gives more weight to others’ lives than his own. He does everything he can for others, probably to avoid having to deal with things closer to home plate. It’s a plus for any and every one he sets his sights on and decides to help save. Be it save them physically or mentally, once Sam’s focus has been narrowed in on someone, he’ll do everything in his power to help. Even though he is not the best at fixing up and taking care of himself, he has a knack for taking care of others.
Sampson is plenty able to feel emotions, pretty strongly, in fact. Some are easier to embrace seeing as they do not require much thought to trigger, anger for instance. But those that eventually require digging deeper than the surface layer of his thoughts and into the packed away baggage he’s never wanting to face, he’ll shut down in a heartbeat. This has resulted in a handful of failed relationships, needless to say. It wasn’t due to commitment issues; rather he was simply incapable of opening up enough. If he can’t open up to himself, no way he can to anyone else. Instead, he focuses on cracking open the cases that fall into his lap. It allows him to drawn himself in any and everything besides himself.
But love isn’t the only emotion he has trouble handling. Sadness. He doesn’t do sadness. As soon as something sad starts to scratch at him, Sam shuts it down, replacing it with either anger, rage, or simply ‘nothingness’. He’s been known to operate on ‘auto pilot’ from time to time, that is until something gets his blood pumping. That’s another reason he acts on impulse and rushes into life and death situations. It lets him feel something without risk of facing demons. It lets him feel pure adrenaline and a hard focus on the then and there.
He’s got a taste and drive for solving the impossible, mainly because the impossible is the one thing that’ll always be there for him to work at. The impossible will never disappoint him. I’ll always be…well, impossible. And even if, no when he solves the impossible case in front of him, he won’t be said to lose it. He’ll be happy to have closed the case, and the next impossible will be right around the corner. It seems like each day there’s a new, weird case for him to focus on. Like super weird, so weird it doesn’t make sense…like there’s more going on. That little detective brain of his is screaming at him to take a closer look, but even the mundane who notice the oddities out there never truly want to see the truth. They want to remain in the blissful ignorance. Except…it keeps scratching at him. Look closer…just a little closer…

Historical
(view spoiler)[
For the most part, Sam’s early childhood was pretty average. It wasn’t until his teen years that his life started to get off the rails a bit. It started whenever some thugs started to terrorize local businesses, trying to make them pay for protection—protection from themselves, essentially. Sampson’s father, Lucas, owned a mechanic shop, and instead of insisting on a few hundred here and there for ‘protection’, the thugs wanted Lucas to be their personal chop-shop as well as fix up any of their vehicles after they got into ‘accidents.’ At first, Lucas refused to do it.
But anyone can be...persuaded.
The particular persuasion used to get Lucas to give in involved threats directed at his wife, Amy, and his two sons, Heath and Sampson. So Lucas began to do their dirty work, breaking down cars, which were no doubt stolen, into pieces that could easily be sold. His father didn’t like being a part of the criminal word, and the best and only way it seemed to cope with it without confiding in anyone was alcohol. It was evident to the family that something was wrong when their normally attentive and sober dad started coming home late at night and stumblin’ about.
When confronted by Amy, Lucas told her nothing, saying he was fine and just wanted to get some drinks. But he knew that there was no way a lie like that would hold his stubborn wife over. She started trying to put pieces together, looking into her husband’s life that took place outside of the home. Before long, Amy had scratched the surface; confronting Lucas once more with all her newly discovered information, the two argued. They argued, and their sons listened down the hall.
Sam, now being sixteen, thought it was his job to help protect his family, to help defend them from any and everything. So the headstrong and emotion driven boy got hold of his father’s pistol later that night and left the house, determined to try and send a message to those thugs that they could no longer use his family. Naive and stupidly brave, the teen was. Just at the end of his sidewalk, Sampson hears his brother call out to him, asking where he was going. Sam told his fourteen year old brother his plan, and being a near mirror image of Sam, Heath wanted to help.
Thankfully Sampson told Heath no, that he had to stay behind. With those words, he left Heath standing at the end of their driveway as Sam started to walk down the road. Eventually he reached the thugs little hub of operation and proceeded with his plan. He walked in with his weapon drawn and began to throw around his demands and threats. It was probably amusing to them to see this boy trying and push them around.
It didn’t take much for them to disarm him and start beating him after kicking the pistol far out of reach of the boy. But it was just in reach of Heath, who had followed Sampson and entered the place. Heath picked up the gun and fired at one of the guys kicking his brother. Just as the shot went off, Heath had a number of guns aimed his way, one of which didn’t waste a single moment before firing, critically wounding Heath.
With shots now fired, the thugs were quick to flee, knowing the law would be there any minute. They left behind both boys as well as their dead comrade. Both kids were taken to the hospital, but despite the doctors’ best efforts, they could not save Heath.
The family was broken after Heath’s death. They moved from their home to try and get somewhere safe, but no matter where they lived, the weight of Heath’s death would always be with Sam, and his parents were never be able to look at the boy the same again.
After graduating high school, Sam went off to college, but it never felt right. Nothing really ever felt right after Heath had died. Eventually the young man found his way into the police force, which allowed his headstrong and lack of regard for his life to only grow. In any situation that an innocent’s life was at risk, Sam would go in without blinking to try and save the bystander. Maybe he was trying to make up for what happened to Heath, to save as many people as he could, or maybe it was something deeper. Well, whatever the reasoning, no one would ever know it, not even Atty. Facing his inner demons wasn’t something Atty was particularly capable of.
But where it allowed for his reckless habits to grow, it also allowed for his perceptive and quick thinking skills to flourish. He started to breakdown cases and leads before things progressed to a critical state, allowing him to save lives before they were at risk. By solving murders, he was able to put the ones responsible behind bars, saving future lives. It was the dream for someone with a hero complex, for damn sure. So he was quick to put his focus on solving cases, working his way up the ladder in the force.
Currently he resides in Los Angeles, working as a Detective, with very little friends and little communication with his parents. (hide spoiler)]

Historical
(view spoiler)[
Born into a mundane household, Ametrine should have had a pretty easy and ‘normal’ life. Her family was decently off financially, and her parents were nice and loving. It should have been a near poster worthy life, but there was a problem…a problem no one else seemed to notice except for Ame. There were…monsters everywhere, and no matter how many times she tugged on her parents’ jeans and pointed at the things, her parents would dismiss her. ”A big imagination”, they’d say, Ametrine had a big imagination.
She had more than that. Ames was born with the sight, allowing her to see through glamours and facades, letting her get a good luck of the nasty little world they all truly lived in. Over time, she stopped pointing out things, growing accustomed to the oddities she noticed…but still, the swirly black fiends she sometimes caught glimpses of out of the corner of her eye would send chills down her spine. While playing down the block at a friend’s house at the age of seven, the girl’s eyes set upon a monster; it stood stoic across the street, unmoving…just watching the children play. Ametrine returned the thing’s stares until her friend noticed and said, ”Doggie!” and promptly started to run across the street to play with the ‘doggie’.
Ametrine called out no, telling her friend to stop, that it wasn’t a dog. But it so obviously was a dog to the mundane kid who was rushing over to it to play. Ames followed as quickly as she could, trying to reach her friend before she got to the ‘dog’, but alas, she didn’t. The monster came to life, outstretching its long, boney, black talon-like fingers and slashing at her friend, droplets of red flying everywhere, then the screams happened. Still, Ametrine didn’t stop. She had to help her friend. She picked up a rock at piece of asphalt that’d broken from the road and chunked it at the creature’s head, hitting square on. That gained Ame’s the monster’s attention, a death glare on her.
Just in time, her friend’s parents came rushing out, screaming out at the two kids and at the ‘dog’, fear evident in their voices at the sight of so much crimson spilled on the ground around their daughter’s motionless form. The ‘dog’ stayed still for a moment longer, staring into Ametrine’s eyes, before it bolted down the sidewalk, leaving two parents to their dead daughter and Ames to come grips with the first murder she’d witnessed.
The screaming drew out all the neighbors, eventually reaching down the block to Ames’ house. Her parents rushed down to see what had happened, and took her home soon after seeing the scene. The three walked home, but as they did so, Ametrine caught sight of that thing again. She let out a gasp and pointed, saying that that was the thing that killed her friend. Her parents assured Ametrine that the cat across the road was not the culprit. Cat? Dog? How were they not seeing what she was? It followed down the other side of the road, watching Ame. There was nothing she could do to convince her parents. It was like watching a scary movie and knowing that the bad guy was right in front of them…and being able to do nothing but shout at the screen to people who couldn’t hear.
For the next hour and a half, Ame refused to move from the windows, refused to look away from the creature, and like before, it just sat there, stoic and motionless, glare on Ametrine…until nightfall, then it ran from her sight in a quick dash. In a hurry, she ran to another window, searching out of it for the monster, then another window, but she couldn’t find it. It wasn’t until a crash and shattering sound up stairs, followed by a scream that Ames realized the demon was now inside. The rest of the night happened so quick that it’s almost a blur to the girl. One minute she was fighting against a creature that had mangled her parents, the next running down the stairs with her sister, hiding under the stairs in a small closet, and then...then there was a bunch of sounds, like there was a struggle, and two voices speaking with one another. There was a blood curdling screech, and then there was nothing but silence.
The police soon arrived, and the girls were found. The police said it was a burglary gone wrong because all they saw were stab wounds in the couple up stairs and a serious struggle. They couldn’t see the mangled bodies like Ametrine saw—they could see nothing. No one could.
After this, the girls were sent off to live with their very elderly grandmother. The helpless Ametrine felt in that night haunted her more than the night itself, and she was burning from it. She felt like it was her job to do something because she could see the bad things in the world. She started to hunt after the creepy things, and she would try and get rid of them. She got lucky enough to survive some bad encounters with some monsters of all sorts. But then grandma died, and the girls were put into foster care. Her sister got sent to one foster home, and Ametrine another, and a few more years passed, Ames getting more than just luck on her side with each passing day. She’d become confident, certain in herself to a bad point considering she wasn’t all that.
This became apparently when she was almost thirteen. She got into a pretty bad situation, one she would have died in, if she wasn’t saved by a person…a person who could see the monsters like her. The guy, who she came to know as Gregory Aldertree & her forever mentor, he brought her to an odd place, where so many answers were finally given to her, and she was offered something she was already chasing after, they offered her a chance to fight the demons she saw, to defend others. Even at the young age she was, Ametrine didn’t hesitate to say yes. She became quick friends with Ryan Aldertree, who eventually became her parabatai. She became a shadowhunter, undergoing extensive training and studies over the following, her determination and drive pushing her to learn as much as she could. She took particular interest in the magic of runes, wanting to master them, wanting to being the key word.
Now, she resides in the institute of London as a shadowhunter, on edge and ready to do any and everything she can to hunt down the monsters that stalked the streets. She did, at one point, try to track her sister down, but upon finding out that her sister’s foster family was murdered much like their family had been, Henna’s body nowhere to be found, Ame was at a dead end. Since then, she’s been hunting after any and all information that could lead to her sister, alive or dead.
