21757 25.4 JennRenee's Task: Cold Nights With Winter Reads

I love winter reads. The nights turn cold and I can sit with a blanket and a cup of cocoa or coffee and just live inside a book. I am quite a seasonal reader and in the winter I love to read holiday books for December, winter settings for January and good romances for February... Mix some Thrillers in and sprinkle with some feel good chic lit books and its the perfect recipe for my winter reads.

This is a two book task.

For this task you will choose a genre from my list of favorite genres for winter and use that genre for two books.

Choose the MPG: Christmas, Thriller, Chick Lit, Mystery, or Romance
Genres must be listed as a stand alone.
State the genre

Book 1: Read a book with a word int he title of 4 or more letters made from this quote:
Winter was made for warm blankets and large books.
Letters may be used as often as they appear.
Required: State the word

Book 2: Read a book by a single author whose first and last initial can be found in either COLD NIGHTS or WINTER READS
Letters may be used as many times as they appear, middle initials may be ignored
Reequired: State the phrase

21757 25.2 - Nick KY’s Task: Rivers

In the suggestions for this season, Kathy KS pointed out the U.S. National Wild and Scenic Rivers Act. That sounds like a good starting point to me.

Choose two options and read one book for each.
Required: Tell us the options you use.

Option : In 1968, the U.S. Wild and Scenic Rivers Act was put into place designating 8 rivers as Wild and Scenic Rivers. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nationa...

Read a book first published in 1968 or in a year after 1968 that ends in the digit 8 (1978, 1988, 1998, 2008, or 2018).

Option 2: Read a book with one of the 8 original River names as a word in the title, subtitle, or series title. Clearwater and Eleven Point may be broken up so that you only use one word, Clear, Water, Eleven, or Point. Rio Grande and St. Croix must be complete phrases. Plurals and Possessives are accepted. All other variations are not allowed.

Clearwater (Clear or Water is OK)
Eleven Point (Eleven or Point is OK)
Feather
Rio Grande (must be complete)
Rogue
St. Croix (must be complete)
Salmon
Wolf

Required: State the river used.

Option 3: The Sixties saw the advent of Postmodernist thinking. The new thinkers saw Modernism as stifling and restrictive. Renewed interest in the environment was a part of this progressive thought. Read a book from the first 25 pages of the following “Postmodernism” list:
https://www.goodreads.com/shelf/show/...
Required: State the page of the shelf your book is found on.

Option 4: The End. The Mouth. The end of a river, where it pours into another body of water, is called the mouth.

Read a book with either the words “The End” or “The Mouth” found consecutively in the title, subtitle, or series title. No words my fall between the two. Plurals and Possessives are accepted. All other variations are not allowed.

21757 25.1 - KmarieD's Task: It's My Birthday

My birthday comes during this season, so I am making this task all about me.

Choose 2 options and read 1 book for each.
Required: State which options you choose.
Your total page count should be at least 500 pages.

Option 1: I have been a major bookworm since I taught myself to read at a very young age. Some of my earliest memories are family trips to the library. When I was in second grade, the rule was that I could checkout as many as I could carry myself. However, at that time, my city library required us to write out the titles of all our books on our checkout slips. Boy, did my hand get tired often.

Read a book with a title that has at least 5 words. Subtitles are excluded.

Option 2: I love to visit my family and my sister credits me for the exceptional reading levels of my niece and nephews. There is a significant age difference between the first two and their little brother. When the first two were little, the first question when I visited was "What books did you bring?" However, by the time the little one was born, we had transitioned to playing more board games, so although he does like books, his first question is usually "What games did you bring?"

Read a book where all the letters from either BOOKS or GAMES can be found in the title and/or subtitle.
Required: State the word you used.

Option 3: I spend a lot of my whole birthday month blaming all my splurges -usually for books, games and LEGO - on my birthday. I just had to get a new car, well new-to-me, so I won't have as much extra money now that I have a car payment again. Splurge with me by reading my two favorite genres.

Read a book with both individual MPG Mystery and MPG Romance or the combined MPG Romantic Suspense.

Option 4: My favorite animal is the turtle. My very first stuffed animal as a baby was a turtle and I still have it. I also now have quite the collection of turtle memorabilia, but haven't ever had a living turtle. On my wish list is visiting the Galapagos Islands so I can see the turtles in their native habitat.

Read a book with a single author whose initials can be found in GALAPAGOS ISLANDS. All initials count and letters may only be used as often as they appear.

21757 There are just a handful of days left in the Fall 2024 Challenge, so there are some things you need to do NOW!

The Readerboard will not be updated Wednesday the 27th and Thursday the 28th. It is Thanksgiving here and I have a lot of guest to cook for. I will not be on for these two days.

1. Post any tasks that you have already completed NOW. If your tasks are not posted completely and correctly by midnight Eastern time on November 30, you don’t get credit for them, no matter why they didn’t get posted.

If you post tasks at the last minute, problems may not be identified in time for you to deal with them and get credit for the task. Sometimes the problem is that you forgot to include required information, but if you don’t post until the last day, there may not be time for me to identify the problem and for you to correct it before midnight.

To get credit for a task, it must be posted with all necessary requirements in the post and the books must fit the task. If you have any doubts about a book that you’re planning to read at the last minute, you should get it approved in the help thread (and include that information in your post) to avoid any last minute disappointments.

If you're claiming a children's book, I suggest including the AR Bookfinder information, even if you don't notice the genre childrens on the main page. That may avoid problems.

2. From here on out, you should post tasks as you finish them, rather than holding them to post a bunch at a time. And, please, before you post, read the task requirements. If something says REQUIRED, you must include it. Read through the task requirements one last time before you post, to make sure that your book actually works for the task and that you’ve included everything. And, for a list task, check again to make sure the book is actually on the page of the list that you're saying - if you found it on the list 2 months ago, it may well have moved.

Just do your posting as you read, and avoid any unnecessary problems.
Many posts at the end of the challenge make your moderators cranky. Please avoid that.

2. If you’re planning on reading any books that only exist in e-book form, make sure that they’ve been approved for length. Check the spreadsheet linked in post 1 of the ebook verification thread first, and if your book hasn’t already been approved, post in the approval thread NOW, so that there will be time to do the research and give you approval.

Remember that the spreadsheet line or post # MUST be listed in your completed task post for any book that only exists in ebook form, and ebook only formats may not be used for tasks that require a specific number of pages or page limit.

3. Check your Readerboard totals for points, Golden Oldies, It's A Fact, and Big Books NOW. If they don’t agree with your records, first make sure that you check the post through which the Readerboards have been updated. Then check your maths, check to see if you have messages in the ?/problem thread, check to make sure that you’ve actually posted the tasks that you think you have – GR has been known to eat messages! If checking all of those things doesn’t resolve the discrepancy, post in the ?/problem thread right away, giving as much info as possible so that I can try to resolve it.

If a problem was noted with one of your posts, be sure that you reposted the task in the regular posting thread - an edit to the old post, or a note in the ?/problems thread amending the post is not sufficient.

Let's try to have a smooth and problem-free end to the Fall Challenge.

21757 Congrats KmarieD and Beth NC for finishing the Fall 2024 Season! You have a 25 point task for the Winter 2024 Season.
21757 30.9 - TessaVanessa's Task: Ringing in the New Year

Choose 2 options and read 1 book for each.
You may use one book with a MPG Sequential Art, Graphic Novels, Comics, Comic Book, or Manga
Required: State the options.

Option 1: Goodbye 2024! Hello 2025!

Read a book with a page count with only the numbers in 2024 and 2025 (00222245). Numbers may be used only as often as they appear.

Option 2: New Year Resolution

It’s that time of year to make a resolution. Last year I had a coworker say, “Why do the resolutions always have to be about fixing something. Why not do something that is fun?”
So my resolution for 2024 was to visit 24 NEW to me restaurants. I was able to easily achieve this goal and enjoyed some good food along the way.

Read a book with food on the cover. The food should be visible (i.e. not in a can or packet).

Required: Post the cover.

Option 3: Times Square Ball Drop

The ball is a prominent part of a New Year's Eve celebration in Times Square commonly referred to as the ball drop, where the ball descends down a specially designed flagpole, beginning at 11:59:00 p.m. ET, and resting at midnight to signal the start of the new year.

First held on December 31, 1907, to welcome 1908, the ball drop has been held annually since, except in 1942 and 1943 in observance of wartime blackouts.

Read a book set in New York City.
Required: If the setting is not evident from the Goodreads page or metadata provide a reference.

Option 4: Sing "Auld Lang Syne"

"Auld Lang Syne" is a Scottish song. It is traditionally sung to bid farewell to the old year at the stroke of midnight on New Year’s Eve.

Read a book with a word of at least 4 letters from the song Auld Lang Syne in the title. https://www.britannica.com/topic/Auld...
You may use a word from either the Scots or English version but the word must match exactly.

Required: State the word.

21757 30.8 - Delicious Dee's Task: Codex Alera

Sometimes I’m amazed when I find a book that has been lost on my TBR shelf for a while and when I read it, I’m like why did I wait so long? The first book in the Codex Alera series was one of those books and over the last year, I’ve been working on finishing it up.
For this task, you will pick one option (A, B or C) and read book A and book B from that option. Your page count needs to be more than 500 pages (so 501+) and at least one of the authors must be NEW TO YOU. No children’s books allowed. No graphic novels/comics.
Required: specify which option you chose and state the new to you author(s) in your post.

Option A – The Series
The series is centered around the character, Tavi of Calderon and his adventures in the land of Alera.
Book A - Read one of the books in the Codex Alera series
Book B - Read a book with a single author whose initials can be found in JIM BUTCHER – all initials count

Option B – The Titles
All of the titles in the series have either the word FURY or its plural FURIES in it.
Book A - read a book with a word from the singular side of this list in the title: https://englishwithasmile.org/2016/01...
Book B – read a book with the plural of the word you read for Book A found in your title (excluding subtitle).
For example, you might chose to use Pretty Baby - Mary Kubica for Book A and then you could use Babies by Design – Ronald M. Green

Option C – The Furies
The people of Alera use elemental spirits called FURIES, which can aid them in daily tasks, as well as types of sorcery. There are six different furies that a person can wield – sometimes they can control more than one. The six furies are air/aeris, water/aqua, fire/ignus, earth/terra, metal/ferrous and wood/flora.
Required: State which fury you picked.

Book A - Pick one of the furies listed above – read a book where all the letters of the fury can be found in the title (excluding subtitle).
Book B - Using the same fury than the book you used for Book A and read a book where all the letters of the alternate name can be found in the authors name.
For example, you may opt to use AIR for book A and then you would use AERIS for book B
21757 30.7 - Amy FL’s Task: The Headaches of Home Ownership

Before my accident last summer I was in the process of renovating and redecorating my house. The renovations were done when I returned from the hospital, or so I thought. One evening I heard a noise that sounded like something had fallen over. When I investigated I found a part of the ceiling in my guest room had collapsed. I now have to replace my roof and redo a room that was already finished. Home ownership is not always fun.

This is a two-book task. No children’s books or sequential art may be used. Read two books from two different options.
Required: State the options you’ve chosen in your post.

Option 1: Since I have to renovate, redecorate and reroof, read a book with a title word that begins with the letters RE. The title does not need to begin with the RE word, it can appear in any position (Beyond Reasonable Doubt, Ready Player One, etc.)

Option 2: There is water damage from my leaking roof, so I’m now dealing with mold in the guest room. Thankfully, a company is coming soon to remove it. Read a book with a title word (ignore subtitles) of four or more letters that can be made from MOLD REMEDIATION. Letters can only be used as often as they appear.
Required: State the word

Option 3: My former home health aide is also an artist who is going to help me complete my redecorating. Read a book by an author whose first and last initials can be found in MARISSA. Letters can only be used as often as they appear.
Nov 16, 2024 03:03PM

21757 30.6 - XBM’s Task – A Partridge in a Pear Tree

This is a two-book task. Pick one option and read two books.
Required: State the option

Option A:
Book 1: Read a book where an author's first and last initials are found in PARTRIDGE. Letters may be used only as often as they appear.
Book 2: Read a book where both a tree and a bird appear on the cover. I will accept either a branch or a full tree.
Required: Post the cover

Option B:
One definition of a homophone are words that have the same pronunciation, but are spelled differently, such as Pair and Pear.
Read two books, each with a related homophone in the title from this list of homophones: http://www.singularis.ltd.uk/bifroest...
Required: Identify the related words.

Option C:
Because this is the holiday season, read two books focusing on different holidays in the Goodreads description or metadata. This should be obvious from the title, MPG or book description.

Option D:
Pick one holiday MPG, and read two books which share that MPG but which also have different MPGs. For example, if you picked Christmas, Book 1 might have a combination of MPG Christmas and Mystery, and Book 2 a combination of MPG Christmas and Romance.

21757 30.5 - Cat's Task: Books of South America

We will be reading books associated with the continent South America, and using the information on this link for reference: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...

Note: we will only be considering the sovereign states, and NOT the dependent territories.

Pick an option.
Required: state the option.

Option 1: Two Book Option (no page count requirement)

Book 1: Read a book that is set (at least 70%) in one or more countries in South America, or is about one or more countries in South America (if Non-Fiction).

Required: state the country(/ies), and provide supporting evidence if it's not obvious from the GR metadata or blurb.

Book 2: Read a book that is written by an author born in a country in South America. Multiple authors are allowed, provided that ALL are born within South America. The author(s) need not be from the country used for book 1.
Required: provide a link to prove place of birth if it's not obvious from the GR metadata.

Option 2: One Book Option
Read one book of at least 500 pages that fits both criteria of Option 1.
Nov 16, 2024 03:02PM

21757 30.4 - Susan A's Task: Consecutive Letters

You may use one children's book/graphic novel for this task as long as it meets SRC guidelines.

This is a two book task, read one book for each option.

For this task, you will find consecutive letters in alphabetical order, no gaps between the letters. The following is the list of acceptable consecutive letter pairs. The order of the letters may not be changed.

Consecutive letters pairs:
AB BC CD DE EF FG GH HI IJ JK KL LM MN NO OP
PQ QR RS ST TU UV VW WX XY YZ

Book 1: Read a book in which the first word in the title starts with two consecutive letters. Titles that begin with The, An, A or any one letter word are ineligible. Titles that begin with a symbol or a number (1,2,3rd, VI) are ineligible.

Required: Note the consecutive letters.

Examples:
North of Nowhere - NO
Stalking Jack the Ripper - ST

Book 2: Read a book with a title ending in two consecutive letters. For the purposes of this task, subtitles count as part of the title and may not be ignored. Titles/subtitles that end in punctuation, a number or a Roman Numeral are ineligible.

Required: Note the consecutive letters.

The Heiress of Linn Hagh - GH
A Beginner’s Guide to Death, Demons, and Other Afterlife Disasters - RS

21757 30.3 - Katrisa's Task: Reunion - Go Norsemen!

I recently went to my high school reunion. I haven’t lived in my hometown of San Diego for a few decades now, but it is always nice to go home. I hadn’t seen my high school friends for many years and it was fun to see how much we still clicked even though we have taken different life paths and live all over the country now. This task is dedicated to this experience.

This is a 2 book task. Choose an option and read a book A and a book B for your chosen option

Required: specify your chosen option.

Option 1: Valhalla
My high school was named Valhalla, where the souls of the valiant reside in death.

A - Our mascot was the Norsemen. Read a book from the first 20 pages of this list of books about Norse mythology
https://www.goodreads.com/shelf/show/...
Required: state the page your book is found on

B - Hammer of the Gods - When we entered our high school as freshmen and when we graduated we traversed the stairs (up as freshmen and down as graduates) under a rainbow bridge and touched Thor’s hammer for luck and they played the Led Zeppelin song “Immigrant Song”. Read a book with a word of at least 4 letters (words must match exactly) from the first verse of Immigrant Song:

“We come from the land of the ice and snow
From the midnight sun where the hot springs flow
The hammer of the gods
Will drive our ships to new lands
To fight the horde, sing and cry
Valhalla, I am coming.”

Required: State the word.

Option 2: The Reunion

A - My Friends - It was so fun to see my friends! Read a book whose author shares a first name with one of my high school friends: Dan, Daniel, Heather, Kristin, Jenni, Katy, Adam. Names must match exactly.

B - The venue - Our reunion took place in the Gaslamp Quarter in San Diego. The Gaslamp Quarter was renovated to be what it is now in the 1970s and is fashioned to reflect the Victorian age. Read a book that is set in either the 1970s or the Victorian age (1837-1901).
Required: If setting is not obvious from the book page or GR metadata, provide a reference.
Nov 16, 2024 08:53AM

21757 30.2 - MAZZA1's Task: Gregorian Games

This task is related to the months of the Winter challenge – December, January and February. This is a two-book task, pick one book for two different options. No children's books, manga or graphic novels are permitted for this task, and each book must be a minimum of 250 pages.

Required: Specify the options.

Option 1
December, January and February are the 12th, 1st and 2nd months of the year

Read a book with a variant of the number 12, 1 or 2 in the TITLE ONLY.
It may appear as words or numbers; whole numbers or ordinals so 12 : 1: 2 : Twelve, One or Two; Twelfth; First and Second and 12th, 1st and 2nd all work.
Numerals should be Arabic numerals, not Roman numerals (i.e. not XII, I, II)

Example:
12 Rules for Life: An Antidote to Chaos
1st Shock
A Tale of Two Cities
Second Chance Summer

Option 2
These months end with BER and ARY – as we did BER last season we are going to use ARY for this season. Read a book with a word in the TITLE ONLY that ends with "ARY"

You can use the months themselves or words such as "Diary" "Sanctuary"
Examples:
Bridget Jones’s Diary
When She's Wary

Option 3
Read a book whose SINGLE author's first and last (middle can be ignored) initials use only the letters "ARY"
For the purposes of this task you can use the letters more than once

Examples:
Rick Yancey, Asako Yuzuki, Rainbow Rowell, Arthur Adams

Option 4
Read a book that is # 12, 1 or 2 in a series. The number must be shown in greyscale on the GR record
