Far From The Reach of Heaven



In a closed society, far from the influences of the outside world, Muse A grew up in a very different lifestyle than most others. As part of his family's religion, he grew up with multiple mothers and a great number of siblings. Multiple marriage was simply a part of his upbringing. Another part of his upbringing was the strict interpretation of his religion; meaning strict gender roles, observing abstinence, and absolutely no wavering from the hetronormative culture. Set to be married to a distant cousin of his in a matter of weeks, Muse A begins to question every aspect of his life, including his loyalty to his family and their religion.

Muse B is far from pure; living his life however he wants and not paying any mind to other's opinions. Not knowing much about the cultish group that existed only a few miles away from his secluded home, it came as a great shock to him when one of the members stumbled onto his property. In an attempt to find out more, he invites the young man in, and what he hears only increases his curiosity about the place.

Ten years had gone by since the two had seen each other. Ten years since the day Muse A went missing. Prior to Muse A's disappearance, he spent almost every waking minute with his best friend and next door neighbor Muse B. School, bus rides, sleep overs, everything was together with the two of them. Neither of them had the perfect family situation, so they relied on one another often. That is, until Muse A stopped showing up at school or at home and just seemed to vanish. It took Muse A's single father months to report his son missing, and by the time he did, there was no trace.

Muse B was devastated by the loss of his friend, and found himself unable to make many close friends afterwards; instead having a string of only surface level friendships and relationships. Finally, when he thought he was doing alright with moving on, he hears the news that his long lost best friend has been found after all these years. Though Muse A is not going to be the same person that left all those years ago, and Muse B isn't who Muse A remembers, after all they are almost grown up by now.

Background:

Jessica, Henry's biological mother, got pregnant with him while she was in the throws of addiction. The safety of her child was the very last thing on her mind. In all honesty, she planned on leaving the baby at a safe haven location like she had done with her last three. Suddenly, Jessica was offered an opportunity to make enough money to pay off all of her debts to her dealer. All she had to do was to hand over the kid and her debt would be a thing of the past.

Henry never knew anything about the circumstance his mother was in, or even her name. For the first six years of his life, Henry endured sheer torture. He never knew any other life until the FBI showed up one day. The transition to his first couple foster homes was a little rough. They were by far much better than the place he had been, anything would have been, but many of the homes couldn't handle all of the issues that came along with him.

Only a few homes were actually bad, most of the people had good intentions, save for those few. Each family started out wanting to help the little kid, but quickly realized they didn't have the resources to care for him. It wasn't until he was nine that he landed in his final foster home. The couple would become the closest thing to family that Henry ever had; loving him and making sure he was able to get somewhere in life.

At first it was difficult, not only did Henry have issues from the abuse he had suffered, but he had learned he couldn't trust foster families. Too many "parents" had promised him they wouldn't leave him or let him go, but none of them had actually followed through. Lidia and Joseph were different though; patient, caring, and loyal. Even when things got incredibly difficult with Henry, they never gave up on him.

If Joseph and Lidia were the first great people to come into his life, Ryker was the second. Without his foster parents, Henry would probably not be alive today, and without Ryker, Henry wouldn't really be living. It took a long time for Henry to trust Ryker, and they had struggles along the way. It's not often two people love each other before one can trust the other, but that was the situation they were in for a while.

Medical Information:

While our understanding of the physical long term consequences of childhood abuse are still growing, we do know it affects development. Henry has not been spared in this way; his stature is petite compared to others of his age. There are minor things that show he did not grow up like the average child; his somewhat off kilter stride and the obvious scars on his body. Other things are a little more complicated. Since being brought into state custody, Henry has been through years of psychological evaluation and therapies. Throughout the process, he has always held back somewhat in his sessions.

Background:

Aspen first realized his father was evil when he was only three years old. At this age he had already been beaten by his father numerous times, but it wasn't until he witnessed his father killing his mother that he knew. She had burnt dinner and Jackson had killed her with his bare fists. The police were not called or informed; she was buried in the back yard under a bird bath. For several years after it was just him and his father.

During the years where it was just Aspen and Jackson, he didn't really have much will to fight. Everything changed when Jackson decided to adopt another little boy. Now Aspen had a purpose in life; to protect the child from as much as he could. For several years Aspen was able to dissuade his father from harming the younger boy, taking on extra abuse to spare him. Eventually, Jackson abused both boys, though Aspen did his best to take on the majority of punishment.

Each day was like hell without an end in sight. They were not even granted the relief of school, as their father had home schooled them, keeping them away from prying eyes. It wasn't until Aspen was 13 that he was able to sneak out. While out of the home, he stole a phone and proceeded to bring it back home, calling the police and informing them. Jackson actually caught Aspen and beat him for retribution.

The last thing Aspen thought would happen when he called was that he would be separated from his brother. Once they were in custody and had their statements taken, Aspen was sent to a group home. While there, a social worker informed him that his brother had been adopted and he could not make contact with the boy. The only way they would see each other again is if when his brother turned 18 he chose to see Aspen. Devastated, Aspen remained in the group home until he turned 18.

By the time his brother turned 18, Aspen knew he couldn't contact him. The boy had been adopted and started a knew life. Trying to contact him would only be for Aspen's benefit, not his brother's. Aspen would probably be a huge trigger for the boy, and he wanted to avoid that at all cost. It was probably the hardest decision he ever made, but he made it for the boy.

Having made great grades, Aspen went to college on full scholarship. His life was looking good from the outside; EMT, research assistant, a new girl friend. It was not as it seemed though; he struggled daily with PTSD from the abuse and couldn't come to terms with who he really was. To him, admitting that he was gay was never going to be an option. The question of how his brother is doing haunts him every day, but he can only hope he made the right decision.

The news soon came that there had been an issue with the original trial of Jackson. The judge ruled that there would need to be a re-trail and the boys would need to return to testify. When Aspen heard, he nearly passed out. The one silver lining is that he will be able to reunite with his younger brother once more.

They were raised together, abused together, but separated by the state between the ages of 11-14. Sent to live in separate parts of the state, the boys had moved past the abuse they faced, or at least they thought they had. Brought back into the same room together now in their early 20's, they are expected to testify in court against their abuser. Thrust back into the memories, the pair end up relying on one another to help cope with it. This road leads to them falling for one another, despite the fact that they both have relationships back home.

Background:

Heavily tattooed, gay, and possessing a bachelors degree in Psychology, not exactly what most people think of when they hear "Pastor." Still, Finn doesn't see any problem with who he is or how he portrays himself to his congregation. It wasn't something he expected, to be the pastor of a church. Growing up, his father was an ultra conservative religious zealot, turning Finn away from the life of faith.

Within his first two years of college however, Finn found himself yearning for something more. Psychology had always interested him, but he felt the need to do something more, to be something more. It wasn't until he had already graduated that he found himself working at the church and within a year they had hired him as their lead pastor. It was quite a lot to take on, giving the sermon and caring for the members, but Finn loves it more than anything.

Background:

Otto was always trying to find his place, never quite fitting in to any one place. Raised by his single mother, Otto and his older brother Randal were removed from the home on multiple occasions. Despite the rocky times, the family was pretty close; everyone looking out for one another. It wasn't until he was 13 that Otto realized his mother had any sort of problem. Within a year, his mother passed of an overdose. Fortunately for him, Otto's older brother was 18 at the time and took him in to care for him.

This let Otto avoid being sent to a foster home, and he was very grateful to his brother. At 16, Otto found himself in love with his 20 year old neighbor. Although it wasn't the typical romance story, the pair did end up together, Otto moving in during his senior year of high school.

Things were finally looking up for Otto; he was starting his freshman year of college and had just recently gotten engaged to his boyfriend of now two years. Everything came crashing down when the accident happened. Leo, his fiance had too much to drink and ran a red light, causing the collision.

||The Plot||

||"The Worst Thing You Ever Did Was Save My Life..."||

Muse A was a new firefighter at the time of the accident, in his first few months of training. Muse B was being driven home by his fiance, the young couple celebrating their engagement with a few drinks with friends. Everything in his life seemed to be going perfectly, at least until the trailer crashed into them. After sustaining fairly significant head trauma, Muse B only remembers the night in little pieces, but he remembers holding his fiances hand before being pulled from the car. After a few months, Muse B is released from the hospital, but his fiance sadly passed away in the crash. Devastated by the event and unable to recall everything that happened, Muse B starts to grow more and more angry at his rescuer, Muse A. Wishing he had died with his fiance and looking for answers, Muse B shows up at Muse A's apartment. Through confusion and grief, a passion is ignited amongst the two men.

When we choose a topic or plot, I want to talk about it first. Twists and turns are fun, but not when they are only in your head. I love developing a plot and characters together, so let's talk about it. I am not saying that all of the character's past has to be decided prior to starting, but don't constantly change things on me.

-Post Length & Literacy:
I usually write anywhere from one to five paragraphs per post. It really depends on what is going on at the time. I understand that sometimes this may be on the shorter side, and I'd rather have quality over quantity in the end. I am not an English major, my grammar is not perfect, but I do want to be able to understand what you are saying.

-Character Depth:
As a gay man myself, I prefer not to play a super rigid "bottom" or "top" relationship. Meaning, I like to play characters with depth and where both characters are allowed to display a full range of emotions and characteristics. This is different of course for plots where there is an inherit power dynamic.

Background:

There are plenty of horror stories about foster care, and some things are true, but not all of them. There certainly was abuse in Max's experience, and not enough love to go around, but that wasn't why he left. Leaving was an easy choice; he wanted to be in charge of his life for once, to have a say in where he was and what he did. It's not like he had anyone tying him down to one place, and at least this way it would be hiss own decision.

Max entered foster care at just three years old when his mother overdosed for the last time, actually dying this time. Being only three at the time, Max didn't really understand what was happening. To this day he can't really recall his mother's face or even her voice. Sometimes that gets to him, but he tries not to think about that too much. Growing up the way he did, Max knows how to take care of himself and is wary of people offering things to him. He doesn't trust others easily and has to acclimate himself to someone when he first meets them.

Background:

The first time Felix realized he was different from other kids was when he was only a few years old. The fact that he would one day go blind was frightening, and even though he thought it would get easier to accept, it didn't. Growing up was hard as kids can be cruel when they see someone different and it wasn't until Felix became fully blind that he was able to accept his fate. Living alone with just his father, there were rough times between the two. His father couldn't accept that Felix would be anything less than independent, and refused to help him with somethings he probably should have helped with.

As a result of his father's indifference to Felix's struggles, Felix is used to having to do things on his own, even if they are dangerous. On more than one occasion, Felix has injured himself trying to do something that he should have just asked for help with.

Background:

The Society:

The society that exists on the island is not a barbaric one, but one that is ignorant of anything outside of itself. At some point the people knew there were others that lived off of their island, but those people have long since passed. All that the people of this island know is what they have. There are herbal medicine men, builders, hunters, farmers, and all the essentials for a society to be in place. The head of the society is a man named Measo and he has say over everything that happens. Every family has a specific job and their children are expected to follow in their parent's foot steps without question. Most of the unions between men and women are determined before they are even pre-teens. This society views the age of adulthood to be 16, and most people are 'married' some time near that age.

Not having a spouse is looked at as very taboo and bringing shame to your entire family. Though there has been some history or same sex relations, it is banned entirely. Those that have been found out were exiled and most likely died on their own. Everything they have is fairly primitive; wooden houses, hand made clothing, wells and so on. Women's role is birthing and raising the children where men's role is providing for the village. The life expectancy is fairly low as their understanding of medicine is very limited. Loosing a child from the flu is not uncommon and many women die giving birth. The village is located far enough off the shore that it is not easily seen, but close enough for the fishermen to reach the coast daily. While their contact with the outside world is non-existent, they speak English with a few of their own words mixed in.

Tucker:

Growing up, Tucker knew very little about his parent's past. He knew they had been chosen to marry and that his father's family were fishermen, but that was about it. Corine, his mother, and Levin, his father, were 16 when they married. Within six years, Corine had given birth to five children; four boys and one girl. Tucker was the second youngest, but watched his younger sister die when she was just three from a fever. This glimpse of death was just the first in a long line. When he was 7, one of Tucker's older brother's died after drowning at sea. His mother's death was slow, taking place over the course of weeks. They had no way to know, but she was dying of cancer.

With out a maternal figure, the boys were left to raise themselves, as Father's are not responsible for caring for their children, even if their wives die. At the age of 20, Tucker is seen as somewhat of an outcast, bringing shame to his family. By now he is expected to have a wife and children of his own, but he refused to marry. Though he is looked down upon, he is still part of their society and still works as a fisherman. Hidden from everyone is the part of Tucker he can never show; the man who dreams of more, of something other than the life he lives.

Because of their limited medical knowledge, many conditions that are easily treated in other parts of the world are not able to be helped. Tucker has had his share of incidences seeing as he has been fishing with his family since he was able to walk. After a nasty fall on a boat when he was four, Tucker lost complete hearing in his right ear. The subsequent tinnitus (ringing in the ears) never went away for him. The ringing comes and goes and sometimes is just annoying while other times is causes splitting headaches.

Toby's memory begins somewhere around the age of eight. It might sound odd that he never thought that to be strange, but he never really thought of it. As far as he knew, his mother had left long ago, so he was satisfied with the answer. Though he lived with a sick and sadistic man, Toby's life was not straight out of a horror movie. He continued to go to school and maintain grades while he lived with the man he believed to be his father. This is not to say that it was a good life, or even an okay life.

Growing up, all Toby knew was fear. From the moment he woke up until the moment his eyes closed, a large portion of his thinking revolved around avoiding being hurt. The abuse had been going on as long as he could remember, seeming as normal as anything else in his life. When the social worker came to his home, Toby had no idea what it was for. She simply stated that his father was in custody for battery, and that they would be taking him to a foster home. After a few days in the home, he was again greeted by the social workers, but this time detectives were with them.

Back Home:

Joanna and Harris had their worlds fall apart when their only child was taken. They searched for ages for the boy and tried to do everything to keep his face plastered on the news. A few years after he went missing, Joanna accepted that her son was likely gone and gave up hope. When she did this, she saw no more point in living, and ended her own life. Seeing his son disappear and subsequently loosing his wife, Harris began to spiral. A small drinking problem became a big drinking problem; he has racked up four DUIs and many nights for drunk & disorderly.

Alcohol would not be the only vice Harris would gain to deal with his pain; he would turn to opioids to numb the pain. With all of his issues, Harris lost the house he had raised his son in and he would loose almost every job he ever got. The town's sympathy for him ended a few years after the loss of his wife.

Medical Information:

While our understanding of the physical long term consequences of childhood abuse are still growing, we do know it affects development. Toby has not been spared in this way; his stature is petite compared to others of his age. There are minor things that show he did not grow up like the average child; his somewhat off kilter stride and the obvious scars on his body. Other things are a little more complicated. Since being brought into state custody, Toby has been evaluated by a psychologist. Due to his unwillingness to cooperate with the psychologist, Toby could not be diagnosed with anything at this time.
