Check out this Wikipedia article for a list of all of the SFWA Grand Masters: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Damon_K...I'll be reading Lincoln's Dreams by Connie Willis. I expect I'll read some others as well.
I'm nearly done with Lovecraft Country, which was recommended to me by Daryl Gregory. I may also do Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking, which was recommended by Felicia Day. If you haven't found a book for this one, see if any of your favorite authors blog, tweet, or instagram about what they're reading.
There's The Shining, of course, if you're looking for something disturbing. I'll be reading Hotel Pastis: a Novel of Provence.
Friday Night Lights: A Town, a Team, and a Dream is a perfectly fine and interesting book. I just can't seem to pick it back up.
I'm more than a little angry with myself for not finishing a single steampunk novel last year. Here's hoping that Karen Memory is not my only steampunk read for 2018.
I started several of these last year but didn't finish any of them in the designated GenreLand month. So I'll see if I can finish Turn Right at Machu Picchu: Rediscovering the Lost City One Step at a Time this time.
I have to do this one before I count anything else, so I am going to give Great Expectations another go. I've been working on that thing since at least 2011! The entire list can be found on Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oprah%2...
Later today I'll be posting prompt threads. For some of them, I'll link to other discussion threads where people posted suggestions. Like that poetry one. I mean, wow.
I am not sure, so interpret it however you like. :-) I'm considering it something that is considered a classic but that isn't constantly popping up on "classics you must read" lists. I'm going with The Conjure Woman.
Yay! This is the one prompt I didn't finish in 2017, so I'm forcing myself to finish it first this year.
Finish a book (abandoned for at least a month) that shows up on Goodreads as having at least 400 pages. If your edition doesn't have 400+ pages, please confirm that there is an edition on Goodreads that does. You're on your honor here.Unabridged audio is fine, but just increasing your e-reader's font size until you get it to show 400 pages isn't.
This is for rescuing a book that does not qualify for one of the prompts. It should also be noted that you can complete each prompt only once, so if you have already completed the prompt that the book qualifies for, you will need to post it here instead.
Finish a book that you most recently abandoned sometime before 2010. (I realize not everybody keeps track of exactly when they abandon a book, so you're on your honor to use your best judgment.)
Finish a book that you abandoned (at least a month previously) in hopes that you would later be in a more suitable mindset to enjoy it.
I'm claiming two points for French Milk. This was promoted as an art-and-photo memoir about a mother and daughter bonding during an extended visit to Paris. Lady Bird it ain't. And it takes them forever just to leave the US. My advice is to skip straight to Knisley's Relish: My Life in the Kitchen for a foodie memoir with lovely color artwork.
Finish reading a book (abandoned for at least one month) that is part of a series. It doesn't matter if you have read anything else in the series or if you have any plans to do so. Goodreads is usually pretty good about indicating which books belong to series, but if you have any questions, just ask in the thread.
Finish a book that you most recently abandoned in 2015. (I realize not everybody keeps track of exactly when they abandon a book, so you're on your honor to use your best judgment.)
Finish reading a book (abandoned for more than a month) that was a gift to you. Winning it as a prize also counts.
Finish any book that you abandoned (for at least one month) because you were having issues with the language. This is really subjective, but here are a few examples:- It seems like an inferior translation
- The author uses technical jargon that is new to you
- You're reading it in a language you are not fluent in
- You are frustrated with poor editing
- The author's style is more poetic/flowery/vulgar/stream-of-consciousness/experimental/whatever than you are comfortable with
Finish a book that you abandoned (at least one month previously) in order to lend it, give it away, or release it into the wild. You may, of course, obtain a different copy of the book.
