I was there at Bitburg, with Reagan (first time I met him), Gen Matthew Ridgeway, Helmut Kohl and Johannes Steinhoff (at Steinhoff's request), and Reagan did not know about the SS graves at first. When he found out, that they were 12th SS Division graves, mostly conscripted teenagers, he went. Steinhoff then suggested that he visit a couple of the camps as well, which they all did.

I cannot remember his name, but I know who you are talking about. he and the woman we caught were part of the old Baader-Meinhoff gang, her name was Sophie "something" I think, but not her real name. She was in the white Mercedes we reported at Schwaebisch Hall while we had covert tactical observation.

2059 I was stationed in Bamberg, and was often in Frankfurt. They murdered one of our soldiers, took his military ID and entered our base. We were awakened by the explosion at the Brigade HQ, I woke up on the floor. Later, we were on recon patrol, when I observed a white Mercedes, which happened to make several routes around the railhead. This was a Pershing delivery site. We (my two man LP/OP) radioed the call and our observation. Polizei moved in, and two women, one a most wanted terrorist were in the car. Strange days indeed.

2059 I see this differently, as an author and historian. I think Mein Kampf should be read by everyone, with a caveat stating "serving as a warning to us all."

2059 FYI, Leutnant Kurt Schulze is a friend, JG-5 pilot with 3 kills. Lives in California. Walter Schuck, 206 kills and the Oak Leaves was also JG-5 (later JG-7) and is still alive and well, and my friend Walter lives in Germany.

2059 In my book The Star of Africa, I give many examples of the Germans' opinion of their Italian ally from the men themselves. They were less than impressed.

There was in fact open anti-Semitism in Poland, not unique in Eastern Europe. Remember that Galician Poles formed one of the most effective death squad auxiliaries. In addition, the Uprising of 1943 was almost entirely a Jewish event, they received little non Jewish Polish support. The 44 Uprising was different, called the General Uprising because the Red Army was closing in, that gave 'braveheart" syndrome to the Gentiles and any Jews remaining in hiding.

Boyington's full interview, along with Robin Olds, Francis Gabreski, Robert Johnson, Joe Foss and Edward Haydon will be in a new book I am writing now with Anne. The American Aces Speak (working title) in the same format as The German Aces Speak, but no Q&A, just their narrative. The second volume of my Germans will be out in March from Zenith Press.
