I started out at the age of 14 working after school cleaning the library so that I could pay half of my high school tuition. Following that, I worked after school as a "stocker" in the ladies apparel department of K-mart. After getting off work, I would take the city bus back home. Usually, it was about 7:00 pm. After graduation, I attended airline school in Kansas City ( I had high hopes.) I was offered a job as a ticket agent but didn't see Kansas City in my future. The next two years were occupied by honing my skills in the life insurance business, it was both boring and educational. After being married at the age of 20, I began my life as a military wife which lasted for 22 years. Along the way, I gave birth to three children, earned three academic degrees from ivy league colleges and spent 35 years as an RN. I have just published my second book, "Generations Intertwine" and am working on #3.
Costs to publish (40 new)

201765 Ben,
I agree with you. It is very expensive to be an indie-publisher. I published my first book through AH and then my current book with Amazon and both was a learning experience. Each time the process was expensive and the author only hopes that they can recoup their investment. I appreciate your post.
201765 Carole,
I checked out the three web sites that you listed. You have a very talented family.
201765 I just completed my next book that falls in the genre of - generational fiction. It is titled, Generations Intertwine. This fictional continuation of an ancestral drama which began in "Lines of Listening," adds forbidden sexual interludes and a secret adoption to an already fragile lineage. It presents family members as they discover their shared, fractured relationships by innocently joining a community sponsored genetic investigation. An illegitimate heir from a passionate affair and a young woman's love of science may ultimately prove to be the family's salvation.

201765 I understand the dedication that is deserved toward veterans, whatever military conflict that they served for our country. As an RN with the Veteran's Administration, I worked with the OIF, OEF initiative which focused on attending to medical care for these veterans. They are proud, motivated defenders of the US who always deserve our support and compassion.
Good job to all.

201765 Hello, my name is Joyce. My first publication was "Lines of Listening." An expose' of child abuse and marital betrayal. It has seen modest success. I also maintain a weekly blog - linesoflisteningblog.wordpress.com. It's dedicated to health and wellness. My current book, "Generations Intertwine" is a fictional account of the Henry family struggling to resolve their secretive past. It's due out August, 2017.

201765 That is so nice for you to give another author some direction when they are having challenges.

201765 It is so nice to see the encouragement for everyone on this site. I am working on my second book. It is my first experience with "walking through" the publishing steps myself, editing etc., and at each step and turn I have found a mentor and support. Thanks to everyone.

201765 All of this discussion is very helpful. I published my first book with a "company" (AH). It was not a good experience and very costly. With this next book "Generations Intertwine," I am going through the process myself - step by step. It is definitely a learning process. The support I receive from other Indie publishers is invaluable for me. Many thanks and heaps of regards.

201765 o.k. Thanks for the quick reply. This is my first attempt at self publishing where I do each step myself. My first book, I went through a publishing company (AH) and they did the process for me (boy did that cost me a lot of $$$). So, this time is a learning process for me. Everyone I have encountered in the Indie community has been very helpful. Thanks...

201765 Tell me more about the marketing between Createspace and Ingram Sparks??? Just finished my next novel and am looking for a publisher. I'm an Indie writer. Thanks

201765 Can a Indie author proceed with publishing their book without the copyright in their hands for their book. (i.e. still waiting for it) ? I understand that it may take a little while for the final documents to come back to you after applying for a copyright of the book.

Well, it's not exactly song lyrics, but I need to know about copyrighting books in general. I have finished writing my book and need to find information about the process. Do I apply for copywriting to a specific agency?

201765 Good morning - this is Joyce, I just published "Lines of Listening." Since that endeavor, I have been attending seminars dedicated to the subject of publishing and marketing. Yesterday at our local library, the presenters Jonathan Sturack and Roger Blanck, both published authors, gave focused information concerning dedicated authors. They related having 2 separate websites if you are using facebook. Also, on your author site their advice was to use a standard, current picture of yourself that is clean and professional. This same site should NOT contain any information of family activities or pictures of your family pet - keep it dedicated to business. They noted that each author should be ready to answer a key question, "What is your book about?" This is the first question that each and every person will ask you. You, as an author, should be able to answer this question at any time.
