With calibre you don't have an 'open file' sub-menu. You click on 'Add a book' to select the document you want to convert.Take a look at the web help section:

Save your .doc document in the html format and have it opened by calibre.
I maybe wrong but David Brown's Da Vinci Code was refused buy all the traditional publishers he querried and look how things turned around. Stephn King once said he was surprised to see his publisher accept what he considered as pure trash written during his let's say drinking problem years .Self-publishing is an option writers have and has nothing to do with the existence of more lower quality writing than traditional publishing.
P.S. Sorry about my English, I maybe had one too many. LOL

C.C. wrote: "My apologies for getting off topic again, but could someone please fill me in on how to insert a book image into a post? I couldn't seem to get it right on a previous post. Thanks."There may be another way, but I never found it. So this is how I managed to insert my book cover image. I copied the suggested image htlm code presented in the '(some html is ok)' tag above the post text area and went through the following steps:
1. Go on your Goodsreads author page
2. Right click on the thumbnail image of the book cover you want to insert and select the show image in the contextual menu. You can also select 'copy image url'.
3. Copy the image's url appearing at the top of your browser
4. Paste it in the following htlm line where indicated:[image error]
5. Write your book title in the alt tag inside the above htlm line
6. Remove both width and height tags to avoid image distorsion
7. Paste the resulting line in the post text area where you want it to appear.
8. Click on the preview tag at the bottom of the post text area to see if it's ok.
9. Add any additional text you want.
10. Post your message.
Keep the line somewhere to re-use eventually.
