Question: What motivates my character?Area of Improvement: Analysis to try and add cause and effect
In the memoir , Unbroken, written by Laura Hillenbrand, the protagonist Louie Zamperini is motivated by his thoughts of survival and the day the he will see his family again. After crash landing in the Pacific ocean during a rescue mission, Louie survives the crash with 2 other people. After a 47 day drift on a raft Louie finds himself in Japan, only to become a prisoner of war. He says "Dignity is as essential to human life as water, food, and oxygen. The stubborn retention of it, even in the face of extreme physical hardship, can hold a man's soul in his body long past the point at which the body should have surrendered it..” Being a prisoner of war causes Louie to think more and more about survival because survival and dignity is like food, oxygen, and water all essential to us. Therefore survival and family motivates my character.
Focus Question: What is the purpose of the secondary character? In Dave Pelzer’s memoir “A Man Named Dave”, the purpose of the secondary character is to help the main character get through tough times, a very important character in this book is his son Stephen because whenever Dave returns home from work the first person he wants to see is Stephen. When Stephen was born Dave told him “What I do, I do for you. As god is my witness, I’ll make things right for you.” page 203. Stephen’s purpose as a secondary character is to help his father through his tough times and give his father hope because he father told him that everything his father did was for him.
Question:What is an important choice or action your character made?In Ned Vizzini realistic fiction novel, it's kind of a funny story, an important choice Craig made is when he decided to stop taking Zoloft, which is the medicine he is suppose to take to help stop his depression. This caused Craig's depression to worsen, which caused him to think about killing himself "Okay, so how do you feel right now? I want to kill myself." page 148. After he stopped taking Zoloft Craig became to start thinking about how he might fail school, how he is a failure, and how his friend Aaron is better than him. Not taking Zoloft causes Craig to continuously to doubt himself over and over again. This causes Craig to think about killing himself by jumping off the Brooklyn Bridge.
