In her ninth novel, Dirt on the Ninth Grave, Darynda Jones brings back her character Charley Davidson. In this novel, Charley is suffering from amnesia and is unaware of her past, her friends, her daughter, and her supernatural powers. She has learned that instead of being a lowly grim reaper, she is in fact a God. The birth of her daughter has begun a war with Lucifer as Beep (aka Elwyn) is prophesied to bring about his downfall. The fear of losing her daughter has caused Charley to lose her memory and transport herself to the town of Sleepy Hollow, NY, where she works in a diner as a waitress named Janey Doerr. Unbeknownst to Charley, her friends and family have moved to Sleepy Hollow to protect her. Cookie, her best friend, has taken a waitressing Job right along side her and her husband, Reyes (also the son of Lucifer) has become a cook. Together with Uncle Bob, Osh, and her gangster ghosts sidekick, Angel, these supporting characters surround Charley and try to keep her safe until her memory returns.
In addition to amnesia, Charley aka Janey, also realizes that the shop owners next to the diner, the Vandenburgs, are being held hostage and her co-worker Erin, has a ghost haunting her newborn daughter. Charley has caught the eye of the cop who first found her in Sleepy Hollow, but he’s having a hard time realizing she just wants to be friends. And she also finds herself insanely attracted to her own husband while another waitress makes a play for Reyes. Although Charley can’t remember her name, she still feels the same urges to protect the people around her and make her world a little bit safer. At great risk to her own safety, of course.
As the novel progresses, Charley becomes aware of her gifts. She is able to help souls pass to the other side and her extra sensory ability to tell when a person is lying help her to find the information she needs to help the Vandenburgs. Her supernatural side kick, Angel, helps keep her safe and does a lot of her investigating for her allowing the hostage situation to be resolved safely. And when all seems lost and Charley is kidnapped by the demon possessing her stalker cop non-boyfriend, Osh comes in to save the day with the knowledge and secret power to vanquish the evil inside Ian. Over and over, Darynda Jones shows both Charley AND Reyes, that neither person is able to solve problems alone. Whether they rely on each other or their own little Scooby Gang, they need to combine powers, knowledge, and abilities in order to vanquish the evils they face in each novel.
Although I still struggle with the main character in the series, I liked this installment. It went back to the roots of the Charley Davidson series where she was relying on her abilities to solve the mysteries in the town of Sleepy Hollow. Much of the character interaction gets lost in the super-mythology of Good Gods vs. Evil Gods, Heaven and Hell, and the eventual destruction/salvation of human kind.
