I have a feeling that IF we could get book clubs to read Columbine, the discussions would be tremendous - deeper, more wide-ranging, more important. Sometimes at our book club meetings, the discussion consists of "Hey, I liked the book." "Yes, it was good." "How are your kids?" I'd like to get away from that. Katie, Natasha, and Jennifer, thanks for letting me know that my friends' reactions aren't an anomaly.
I want to derail the conversation for only a minute. I have a question for Martha and other GoodReaders instead of the author. I've had the strange experience of recommending Columbine to many friends, including my Book Club, and getting NO response. They refuse to read it. Have any of you all had that experience? Is it just that people are supposed to be reading frivolous beach books at this time of year? Do you think they fear what they might encounter in it? I'm really baffled as to how to convince my friends that they're missing out on a remarkably good and important book.
I'd be interested in your take on this situation.
