I thought having Death narrate the story was ingenious. His personality (strange that Death has a personality) was actually likable. He seemed to dislike his job but wearily trudged on.
I listened to the audiobook - the narrator was excellent in his portrayal of Death.

I recently read
A Thousand Splendid Suns which disappointed me. Earlier this month, I read
The Kite Runner by the same author - it is the best book I have read this year. I was hoping for a repeat winner but it just didn't work for me.

Mine was a 2 star rating. Philosophical, illusionary, or not, I found the book slow and it was difficult for me to maintain concentration. I listened to the Audible version which is probably why I made it through the entire story. Had I read the book, I probably would have given-up on it before the halfway point.

The ethical questions this story brought up made me a bit uneasy. I guess you never know how you would react to a situation unless you have been there but I like to think I would always err on the side of saving a life. I didn't question Ruth's decision to disregard direct orders trying to save the baby's life. How could she not try?

I, too, can see both the practical and the frivolous sides of gift-giving decisions. I had difficulty determining the lesson to be learned from the book but I enjoyed reading it.

I've never read it before either. Looking forward to it!

I didn't expect to like this book as much as I did. It was so much more than the cutesy fluff I thought it would be. Ove was a great character, as was Parvaneh. She was fearless which is probably the only way she could make Ove respect her. I laughed a lot and had a few sniffles (ok, there were tears). I thought it was a great read.

Hi all, I am an avid reader, averaging 5 or 6 books per month. I read on my iPad (usually Kindle format), and listen to audio books in the car. I like all genres except horror and dystopian themes. I live in Texas with 5 cats and a couple of humans. I'm very fond of the cats. My Goodreads name, Pyewacket, is the cat's name in the movie Bell, Book, and Candle. Feel free to shorten it to "Pye".
Happy reading!
