Science Fiction = war prisoners, survival, testing food, eventually fighting back.

A batch of war prisoners are unloaded on a vacant habitable planet to survive or not. They find caves for shelter, and animals for meat, and test vegetation for food, with some some getting sick and some dying but enough to survive. Eventually they prepare for the return of the enemy designing a repeating crossbow. I estimate I read it in the 1970s but could be off by plus or minus 10 years (60s to 80s)
