Nope, never found it. But it still nags at me on occasion.

What made this a science fiction book? What's the time period of the story?"

I want to say that I read it in the late 60s to mid-70s. It was futuristic, space travel was the norm...but LORD it was so long ago!

Thanks, Andy! Couldn't find my post for awhile. Although we're definitely talking Sortition, it didn't play a major part of the plot of this book, as I recall, more a general background. However, I will be reading "The Years of the City" in the near future. I hace read a good bit of Pohl, but missed that one!

185 Oh, my, I'm new, and have only made one post, and can't find it...posting this so I can hover over my name, lol, and try to find my post!
185 All I remember about this book is that at some point, the USA had decided that anyone who actually wanted to be president was crazy and should not have the job. Everone's name was put into a lottery, and the loser HAD to be president...and the country was running very well like that. I seem to remember this being discussed by two people in a submarine, but I may well have that bit wrong...sorry I can't remember more!
