In the book "Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children" the main character, Jacob, struggles with the death of his grandfather. He doesn't know how to handle this change in his life and the feelings he has. His grandfather's past was significant to him so when he died he looked to his grandfather's past for closure. His last words were what stuck in Jacob's mind and he needed to figure out what they meant. Jacob and his father travel to the island where his grandfather stayed as a child. Throughout their trip, Jacob constantly looks for clues about his grandfather.

In my book, "90 Minutes in Heaven", the author, Don Piper, talks about his deadly car accident and how he came back to life. He says the EMTs stated that he died instantly. While the accident backed up traffic on the bridge where the accident occurred, a preacher came onto the accident site and prayed for Piper although he was dead. As the preacher was singing a song Piper began to sing along; the EMTs were alerted that he was alive, but they didn't believe it. Various chapters of the book talk about his time in Heaven and his time spent with God. Piper was on the way home from a convention where he was gathering information in order to open a new church. He is a strong believer in God and knew that his coming back to life was God's doing.

My book, "The Sweeter the Juice", is predominantly about family. The daughter of an African American family wonders about her ancestors and her multiracial heritage. She ultimately travels back 6 generations seeking information about her family as well as herself. For Shirlee, the narrator and author of the novel, to go as far back as when America's history began shows the importance of family to her.
