In the book: Halo: Broken Circle, the covenant is formed, and those who oppose its Writ of Union face death. the leader of the resistance, Ussa Xellus, faces advirsity in the fact that if the Covenant find him and his rebels, they will kill him. He is attempting to overcome this by gathering enough followers to make a real stand against the Covenant.

In Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back, Luke is told by Darth Vader that he is destined to either join the Dark Side or to die. Luke believes he does have a choice, that he can defeat Vader and the Emperor, even though Yoda and Obi-Wan have told him to complete his training first, hes made the decision to help his friends.

In Star Wars: the Empire Strikes Back, the first main characters, Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, and Leia Organa are almost immediately forced the run away from the Empire. I see this as cowardice. However, this cowardice is more or less acceptable, due to the fact that if they were to have stood and fought, they would have surely been defeated, especially since Darth Vader was accompanying the Storm Troopers.
