I am reading "The Nightingale". This story takes place in France during WWII. The characters have turned into different people since the war started. The tough conditions have made them strong and confident. Vianne, the main character's sister, was an innocent, young mother at the start of the war. When the Germans took over, she got out of their way and followed their rules. She now works behind their backs saving Jewish children from being deported, knowing that there are serious consequences if she gets caught.

I am reading The Nightingale. Nazis have taken over France and Isabelle, the main character, doesn't want to obey them. Most of the French have accepted the new way of life but she is against it. She has joined a secret group determined to stop them. She must now try to get a travel pass so she can deliver a secret letter to someone in Paris.

I am reading The Nightingale. France has surrendered to Germany and the Nazis are taking over. Everyone is hoping that it isn't the end for France. A soldier is staying in the home of Isabelle, the main character, and her sister and niece. Isabelle's sister's husband went away to war and they are hoping he will arrive home soon unharmed. All the women are hoping their loved ones with come home. The Germans have said that if a French soldier was captured during the war they will remain in Germany even though the war is over.

I am reading The Nightingale. The characters in my book have to deal with WWII coming to France. Germans have bombed Paris and people are frantically evacuating. Isabelle, one of the main characters is sent away to her sister's house in the countryside. She is shoved into a car full of strangers that will drive her part of the way. The street becomes too crowded to drive so they stop to spend the night. Isabelle is separated from the family she is riding with in the crowd. Now, somehow, has to get to her sister's house without food or money.
