In the book Cake: A Love Story, the them of overcoming adversity is shown little but very powerfully. The man in the story was kidnapped at age 13 and had to live with a serial killer for over a month. He was able to escape and kill the man but has had to live his life without letting in emotion because he is afraid. The book goes on to show how Jake rediscovers love and overcomes his troubled past.

In the book i just finished, Genuine Lies, the theme of family and friendship is present. The main character is invited to the home of a celebrity so she can write the biography of the celebrity. Throughout the story, the two women become very close, especially because of the threatening notes they both receive. The celebrity confesses to the main character that they are related by family and then the next day the celebrity is murdered. The main character is the main suspect.

In the book Carnal Innocence, the main character is a professional violinist. She had a breakdown a few months before the book picks up the story. She is now living in her grandmothers home in rural Mississippi. She went to live in the south so she could be able to recuperate from her breakdown and decide if she wants to continue performing. She has to find the courage to either stop professionally performing or be a coward and succumb to her parents wishes to continue playing. All the while, in her town, a murder is going around and killing women just because they are there.

The Dark Witch
The theme of love/acceptance is present in this book. The main character is a witch who travels to Ireland to help her cousins fight this evil sorcerer. While in Ireland, she meets this man. The man is very confused about his feelings for her and does not trust his feelings completely. The story relates to the reader the struggle between the witches and the sorcerer and between the man and main witch.
