In this book, Hazel fights through cancer as her adversity and she struggles with it in the beginning of the book. Hazel really doesn't enjoy the thought of doing the group therapy and every thing else and she has this kind of hopelessness when it comes to the cancer. I feel that cancer is one of those difficult things to deal with because it is relentless and if it doesn't kill you physically it can break you emotionally and you just have to remain hopeful and find something to live for no matter how big or small it is.

Louis doesn't handle death well at first because of his faith and the sudden death of one of his family members. He believed that death shouldn't be forced it should come naturally to an individual. However, after Lestat enters the scene, Louis is forced to grow to accept it into a way of life or an everyday thing due to Lestat's nature and way of living. After Lestat enters Louis has to fight with himself on the issue of death as his mortal self doesn't want to harm a human being but his immortal self needs it to survive.

In Interview with a Vampire, this theme is very strong in the beginning as Louis has to make the decision to submit to the vampire way of living or die. He feels that he has a choice but is backed into a corner to the point where he has no choice. My opinion on this is that Anne Rice has incorporated this theme subtly and beautifully as far as context and depth as well as understanding the position that the character, Louis, is in.
