I guess my advice for this series can be essentially summed up as, read the first one and decide from there. The first is clearly the best, and it gets a bit frustrating from there, but my love for the series carried me through.
As I edited this one I realized that I spent too long talking about why I didn't think it was deliberately anti-feminist so much as it was parodying the divide between feminists and assholes, and not enough time talking about how those anti-feminist readings were completely legitimate.

It isn't very long away but it isn't a very spoilery video so I think we're good.
Cheers, Charlie

my 60 second non spoiler book review is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nKYCM...
It's long and I genuinely wouldn't recommend it, but I have a full book summary coming out on the 26th July so if you really want to read it before I can spoil it for you, now's your chance.
I'd recommend sticking around for the summary though. That book is an event.

it's fantasy filled with a lot of description, which I usually don't like but loved in this book. Don't expect a lot of plot.

A 100% full spoiler synopsis of the plot:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OpTR9...

It's a book about children surviving abuse.
The forward reads:
Today is Christmas Eve. Today is my birthday. Today I am fifteen. Today I buried my parents in the backyard.
Neither of them were beloved.
So right away the abusive parents do die, and it's about coming to terms with the aftermath.
Trigger warnings for abuse of a minor, including sexual abuse. It's mostly talked about in the past tense and barely talked about at all. You won't be reading about anybody present tense going through that.

This is a parody book, published in 1933 (although interestingly set sometime in the 1950s), that parodies the rustic country folk type of book that was popular at the time.
There are a few great non-spoiler reviews from other booktubers:

From Lil's Vintage World: (who didn't like the book, in case find negative reviews helpful)

From John David: (who describes the plot/book a bit more thoroughly so if you hate any kind of spoiler then maybe save this review till after you've read it)

(Midday 12th June GMT +10 to be precise, but that'll be on the 12th in many American time zones.)
It's an autobiography of a year of Glenyse Wards life after she left the mission. It talks a lot about the experiences of being aboriginal in Australia in the 60s, and it's written in a really interesting way.
Unfortunately the only way to get it is either on Ebook on amazon or kobo, or second hand copies. When I looked at ebay recently there were a lot of copies there.
Cheers.
Charlie.

I want to get in the habit of giving the group at least four weeks notice so the video will be done on the 29th of Feb.
If anybody (I am aware I am in a group by my self at the moment but hey) wants to read the book and also discuss it or add their own videos about that date, then that'd be fabulous.
I'd like to warn that the book isn't a masterpiece of gender equality, but it gets an interesting array of things wrong and other things right. It gets so many things wrong I feel guilty for recommending it, but it's well known enough that you might want to read it even though you know it's awful. in many ways it's a train wreck, but a fascinating train wreck and I think it'll spark a lot of conversation.
