Alex’s comments from the The Darkest Minds Never Fade In The Afterlight group.

He was selfish but at the same time he wasn't. I don't know how to explain it but he was one minute selfish and the next he showed he cared.
Yeah I still feel so bad for Nico he was such a good character.

Yeah, most definitely. He must have good intentions but went about them in the wrong way.

I feel exactly the same way. In the first book I really hated Clancy and perhaps in the second one too. However, in the third when we discover more of his past and troubles I started to sympathise with him. Even though he has no excuse for many of the things he did but it's hard to hold a grudge over him after hearing about his life.

Also even though he is the villain of the book, being the slip kid doesn't make him a terrible person. I don't think people realise he is giving these kids a place to feel safe again and I think he did have maybe some good intentions at some point... Well maybe.
