Slytherin values ambition, cunning and resourcefulness. Only pure-blooded students are ever sorted into this house. Their colours are green and silver, their emblem a serpent. Their house founder was Salazar Slytherin, and their ghost is the Bloody Baron, who is known to be quite intimidating. Slytherin's common room is located in the dungeons, and under the lake. The room is accessed by speaking the password to the correct wall in the dungeon. The common room tends to be described as dark and cold. Any light in the room has a green tinge, as the lanterns are all this colour and any natural light is filtered through the lake. There are windows where the common room is under the lake, so students will sometimes see the muggle and magical aquatic life moving by. There are many couches, tables, and cupboards around the room, and many cupboards contain high-quality blankets. The dormitories are accessed by students pushing on the correct stone in one of the common room walls.

Ravenclaw values intelligence, knowledge, and wit above all else. Their colours are blue and bronze, their emblem the eagle. Their house founder was Rowena Ravenclaw, and their ghost is her daughter, Helena Ravenclaw, more commonly known as the Grey Lady. Ravenclaw's common room is located in a tower, much like Gryffindor's, and can be accessed by answering a riddle asked by the eagle-shaped knocker on the door. The common room is described as one of the airiest rooms in Hogwarts. Like other common rooms, it is circular. It has many arched windows with a gorgeous view of the school grounds.The common room is furnished with many bookshelves, tables, and chairs. The entrances to the dormitories are on opposite sides of a large marble statue of Rowena Ravenclaw.

Hufflepuff as a house values hard work, dedication, patience, loyalty, and fair play. Their colours are yellow and black, their emblem a badger. Their house founder was Helga Hufflepuff, and their ghost is the Fat Friar. Hufflepuff's common room is located in the basement, and can be accessed by whispering the password to a pile of barrels that conceal the tunnel entrance. The common room has been described as earthy, low-ceilinged, welcoming, warm, and sunny. The common room has many tables and comfortable chairs, so students can study or be social. Near the ceiling, there are many circular windows that provide a view of grass and flowers. The common room is perfectly round, and dormitories are accessed through two perfectly circular doors, one for boys, the other for girls.

Gryffindor is the house that values bravery, daring, nerve, and chivalry over all other traits. Their colours are red and gold, their emblem is the lion. Their house founder was Godric Gryffindor, and their house ghost is Nearly-Headless Nick. Most people will advise you not to ask Nick what "nearly-headless" means, but other than that pet peeve, he's a fairly nice ghost. Gryffindor house's common room is in one of the towers (specifically, Gryffindor Tower). The entrance is accessed by telling the Fat Lady portrait the correct password. The common room has a fireplace, many tables and comfortable chairs. There are two staircases leading upwards from the common room, one that leads to the girls dormitories, and one that leads to the boys. Younger students live on lower levels of the tower, and older students live on higher levels.
