Thinking back, I'm surprised that the police weren't bothered about it. I mean, isn't Incest a crime? Perhaps it's not within Scotland Yard's jurisdiction?

I agree, Susan. There should have been some ambiguity as to who the guilty party is without giving it right away. This is altogether a different style. And I agree with you all that the characters are very unpleasant.

Now that is something I'm not used to. :) I don't know if I like that kind of structure in a murder- mystery story.

I'm a bit confused here. Was Brand just confessed to the murder of father in chapter 7? So does this mean we know the criminal already? I'm doing audio so I might have missed something.

I started and on to the 7th chapter, but I can't make any sense of the story. All I read is the descriptions of the characters and their open antagonism.

I'll be starting tomorrow. Got the audiobook.

I just finished and liked it very much. It's a relief after the disappointment of the preceding book.

The Murder Room, hopefully in a day or two.

I'm reading
The Murder Room by
P.D. James, the last book of the P.D.James's challenge.
Tara wrote: "Just started Elephants Can Remember for our November read. Once again I'm loving all of the AO/HP early on in the running. It has a similar flavor to Five Little Pigs in the long ago ..."How do you like it, Tara? I didn't enjoy it.

This started well but went really down towards the end. It was a big step back from her previous book. I managed to guess the criminal on the second death but wasn't sure he was connected to the later ones till near the end. The motive for the crimes was so ridiculous. I felt she could have done better there. It was a big disappointment after the enjoyment of the previous few novels. The only thing I liked was the setting and Dalgliesh's interest in Emma.

I agree with both Tara's and Sandy's comments on the original murder. It was lost and what's more, the murderer, though identified, could not be brought to justice for want of proof. I enjoyed this novel more than other novels in the series, but that was a major drawback.

I'm into half of the book and liking it so far. I do like the setting which I agree is similar to that in
The Black Tower - remote and coastal. I'm not much familiar with the subplot yet, but I agree with Susan that the book should be appreciated as fiction.
Susan in NC wrote: "I haven’t, but have it on my wish list- I was just looking at scribd, I see the ebook and audiobook of “Fire in the thatch” are available- that was a good one, have you read that book?"It'll be my next read, Susan. Probably in December.

I checked out
Checkmate to Murder, and it sounds very interesting. Unfortunately, it's not available on Scribd and I'll have to buy the kindle. Has anyone read it?
Judy wrote: "I quite liked Rope's End, Rogue's End, but didn't think it was one of her best (out of those I've read so far.) I'll be interested to hear what you think of Murder by Matchlight, Piyangie."I thought
Murder by Matchlight had a good mystery, Judy. I also liked the setting in London with the blitz and the blackouts. It rendered the story a realistic touch.

I found the Poirot-Oliver combination very entertaining. This is one of the very few books that we see Ariadne Oliver in her force! :) And I agree with Susan that Hugh Fraser does an admirable job in voicing Mrs. Oliver.
I also liked Poirot's role as the detective and the human being in helping Norma's cause.

I'm glad to hear that Rope's End, Rogue's End is not one of Lorac's best. Now I don't mind so much for giving it up. :) I just couldn't stand the bickering and the antagonism between the siblings. It put me off. I'm not the easily giving up kind, but it really made me!
Murder by Matchlight is more intereting. We are again in a London setting. The mystery is also intriguing. I think I'll enjoy it a lot.
