169030 Yay! It took me a while but now I've finished reading The Hound of the Baskervilles - quite suspenseful, really, when I sat down and started reading!
That was one diabolical villain!

169030 Hi Loretta and Tina.. this is an "ACTIVE" group. however, most members do not participate in discussions.. I used to post some discussion questions just to start, but I think people are more interested in just checking off the classics from their reading list... and just knowing that there's a deadline and such and that's fine too. people do participate in polls though. if you'd like to discuss, feel free to post on the threads, and usually if no one else, I do respond as the moderator. hope that answers your question!

169030 just curious, did your editions have the "unfinished chapters" section too? and his journal entries while writing The Trial?

i'm just wondering if i should read these parts?

I just finished reading it a moment ago, and I'm so disappointed. It was so pointless.
169030 Everyone ready for some Sherlock Holmes?
Let's enjoy the original, shall we?
Thus... while we wait for the next installment of Benedict Cumberbatch's popular BBC series slated to be released in 2017!

169030 It's the last day to finish this book... and I really need to! Is anyone else bored??!

169030 I really liked both versions of the movie. (2009 + 2004).. but if you're a purist, don't watch them. Colin Firth, especially, did a marvelous job as Henry, the novel's most interesting and fascinating character.

I think I'm saving the 1945 film for when I read the book again - which I'm pretty sure I will.

The Picture of Dorian Gray is certainly one of my most favorite classics.

Aptly put.

169030 Currently, I'm reading so many books, I literally lost count...

Of course, one of these books is The Trial.
Another classic I'm reading right now is Nabokov's Lolita.. interesting memoir-type of setting, and admirable prose.

Recently I also just finished reading The Hobbit - very good during the second half of the book - more action. It made me cry a little, because I forgot the characters who died. VERY SAD. Still love the movies a little bit more, though :)

169030 I started it, and is about 1/3 through... I like it in a way, but still am not sure what the whole point of the novel is ... LOL.

Anyways...

HAPPY POSTING!

That's great. Which audiobook version are you listening to?
I got about quarter through with the book, and just inadvertently stopped, and it took so long to get back to it, that I just might have to start over again.

Thanks for sharing, and I'm also looking forward to read your future posts!
169030 First off, I really loved The Count of Monte Cristo. It was one of those so-thick-and-so-long-but-so-worth-it reads. It reminds me of Tolstoy's novels, but I enjoyed it even more. I might just have found a new favorite author.

Here are some DISCUSSION PROMPTS:

1. "...until the day when God will deign to reveal the future to man all human wisdom is contained in these two words, "Wait" and "Hope."

I've collected several quotes from the novel (posted all of them on our Facebook page) but this last one is my most favorite. Because it does apply to everyone and everything. There is always wisdom in waiting, whether it be in the case of waiting to take action, or of just clinging to a particular hope for the future. Hope allows us to hang in there and be able to realize the fruits of our labor, but it also opens doors to unexpected blessings.

How about you, what's your favorite quote?

2. What did you think of the ending? Were you satisfied with it?

I was really happy, because I wasn't expecting a happy ending at all. I love that the count found someone he loves again (as he loved Mercédes) who loves him even more.

3. Did you feel that what Edmond/the count did to the people who have wronged him in the past was justifiable?
If not for his want of revenge, masked as his want of justice, do you think that Edmond would have prospered as he did?

4. Was the love between Maximilian and Valentine true? Or was it just infatuation between young people? Do you think it constant or bound to change as they grow older?

5. Who was your favorite character and why? What attributes did you like best of that character?

I found reading this particularly enjoyable!
