166738 In the second phase of the competition, writers have a set time limit to write, edit, and post to Goodreads a short story no longer than 5,000 words starting with the winning first line. Once entries have been submitted, a poll will be created to allow the membership to vote for their favorite.

The winning story will be lead work of this group until another competition is held and another winner is selected.

166738 In the first phase of a competition, first lines are suggested. Once seven first lines have been posted, a poll will be created to allow the members to pick the winning first line. Then the second phase of the competition begins.

166738 The process is as follows:

First phase: Members suggest opening lines in the "First Line" topic. First lines must be original and be a single complete sentence. When either 20 first lines are suggested or the week is over, the topic will be closed and the next phase will begin.

Second phase: A survey of the first lines will be created by the moderators and voted upon by the membership. After a week, the winning first line will be published. The resolution of ties will be up to the moderators.

Writing phase: Members will have a month to write and make available for review a short story opening with the winning first line. Short stories must be 5,000 words or less and must be the original work of the signed author. Formats available must include PDF and mobi.

Reviewing phase: Members have a month to select the stories they wish to read and vote for the one they like best. The resolution of ties will be up to the moderators.

The winning short story will be publicized as the featured work for the group all during the next cycle.
