I’m excited to try this one. I have it on Kindle but I might need to keep the room lights on for the creepy parts. :)
I thought this was an awesome book.I jumped into after I recommended it to a friend around February-March. He loved it and he rarely gives 5 stars! That said, it came with a warning: the trick the author pulls off in book 1 can’t be done in book 2.
I still look forward to reading book 2 at a later date. Maybe I’ll plan to do a re-read in a few months; book 1 seems like an interesting book for a re-read, to see what was missed the first time around.
CJ, I keep thinking to start A Sorceress Comes to Call. It is on my 2025 penultimate reading list for May. I saw a friend on Goodreads—that I trust—give it 5 stars. Hope it goes well for you. I should be picking it up shortly. Today, I am receiving two books in the mail: Harriet Tubman Live in Concert by Bob the Drag Queen and A Drop of Corruption by Robert Jackson Bennett.
The Tainted Cup is still my favorite book thus far this year so my anticipation for A Drop of Corruption is a bit overwhelming.
Currently, I’m 200 pages into Quicksilver by Callie Hart as a Buddy Read. One friend said it has a bit too much imagery. It’s preventing her from really getting into the storyline. I’m finding it to be a fun and quick read. Still waiting for the third friend to start, she should be in the next few days.
I finished The Fifth Season. I loved it. I just couldn’t wait for April! That said, I don’t feel super-compelled to read the 2nd book in the series. For some reason, book 2 of Red Risinf has been calling to me a bit more.
Children of Time looks like it’s going to be good and emotional. I’ve seen lots of comments on Reddit saying it is emotional.
“Y’KNOW, there’s really no need for all this violence.”And then the dragons came.
Quicksilver by Callie Hart
(That’s a pretty great setup line. lol … I had a shipping delay on a hardcover book I planned to start before April so I picked this up on kindle a few days ago. So far it is decent—it was a finalist for 2024 Best Goodreads Romantasy.)
A Psalm for the Wild-Built by Becky ChambersIt’s giving cozy, under 200 pages. I’ll finish it tonight—it’s a bit of a palate cleanser.
Excited to start my April reading list!
Oh gosh. I did not realize I'd want to go back and read some of the tales over again--immediately after finishing the book--like Kassad's story or Sol's pilgrimage! Some have more impact than others, but they all play a role in the journey.
Your review made me want to do a re-read. This was a book I couldn’t put down in January. I am patiently waiting for the sequel that is released in April. :)
I picked The Galaxy after finding a few sources that said it made a great standalone. If we feel like that’s not the case, that it should be read in order, I am more than happy to change!

When Saeris comes face-to-face with Death himself, she inadvertently re-opens a gateway between realms and is transported to a land of ice and snow. The Fae have always been the stuff of myth, of legend, of nightmares... but it turns out they're real, and Saeris has landed herself in the middle of a centuries-long conflict that might just get her killed.

With no water, no air, and no native life, the planet Gora is unremarkable. The only thing it has going for it is a chance proximity to more popular worlds, making it a decent stopover for ships traveling between the wormholes that keep the Galactic Commons connected. If deep space is a highway, Gora is just your average truck stop.
I completed Under the Whispering Door for my Quarterly Challenge.Additionally, I am enjoying A Discovery of Witches and plan to finish it this week.
I had quite a few good options for this challenge... I also considered The Name of the Wind but wasn't ready.
The God of the Woods by Liz MooreI also started this yesterday. I listened to the audiobook for several hours—I heard the middle of the book was a bit of a slog so I decided to listen rather than read. Reading the reviews for this were a bit confusing to me because it was up for so many awards last year.
I really like the audiobook so far.
A Discovery of Witches by Deborah HarknessSomeone on Reddit mentioned this for me to read last month. I’m finally getting around to it.
I enjoyed the first few chapters last night.
For those doing a reading challenge, Under the Whispering Door also checks the box for books about teashops. This book reminds me that I haven't returned to finish Bookshops & Bonedust. Travis Baldree is set to release the--if I remember correctly--prequel Brigands & Breadknives in November.
Murderbots will be on Apple TV+ in May (10 episodes)... I bought the first book for my nephew. Hoping he picks it up after the release of the new Hunger Games book this month.
I'm excited to discuss The Tainted Cup! I was captivated by it in January and can't wait to hear everyone's thoughts, even though I won't be re-reading it just yet.
