it's nice to think about it that way, but on the other hand, it's also a failing of our society that we tend to see the 'default' of people to be caucasian. therefore, explicit representation tends to be needed in the media. there is also the issue of a character's race/sexuality/whatever always being /central/ to the storyline; while this is nice, it can also get tiresome as we only see characters in this one light.
that said, I agree that it isn't whitewashing. If ALL the characters in the movie somehow ended up white, that would be more suspicious than uriel asking to be your friend.
If you can find it, could you please post the link to those interviews? I'd love to take a look and get even more embroiled in these books >:D

oh, god, so true. Although Raffe is definitely exemplified as being amazingly attractive, I would 100% support a completely average dude playing it if he could capture Raffe /just right./
