Really enjoyed listening to everyone's recs!I'll nominate:
1. Exit music by radiohead - perhaps when they are driving into San Fran and surveying all the destruction
"Wake from your sleep
The drying of your tears
Today we escape
We escape
Pack and get dressed
Before your father hears us
Before all hell breaks loose
Breathe keep breathing
Don't loose your nerve
Breathe keep breathing
I can't do this alone"
2. Work song by Hozier for Raffe's feels toward Penryn, maybe when he's carrying her body to the refugees and the chaotic scene will just fade to quiet and slomo and this song plays as he emerges from the building...
"My babe would never fret none
About what my hands and my body done
If the Lord don't forgive me
I'd still have my baby and my babe would have me
When I was kissing on my baby
And she put her love down soft and sweet
In the low lamp light I was free
Heaven and hell were words to me
When, my, time comes around
Lay me gently in the cold dark earth
No grave can hold my body down
I'll crawl home to her"
3. And then when the truck is driving away and he's circling and then flys away and the scene fades to her voice over at the end of the book:
"This is the starting of my greatest fear
I'm all packed up, getting out of here
But then you call and tell me not to go
That I'm the one who put the rock n roll
In your life
This is the starting of a brand new day
Never liked this town much anyway
I need this city like I need the rain
I know that somewhere there's a north bound train
Oh I'll
Make it without you
Make it without you
Though my body's laying here
It's my mouth that must be lying now
This is the starting of my fall from grace
My self esteem, oh it's seen better days
But you know I'll never let this go to waste
I'll keep this memory on the map I trace
Back to home"
And Penryn says: "the day is dawning. I never realized what a triumph it is to simply be alive. My sister is with us. Raffe is flying. Everything else is secondary. And for now, that is enough"
The moment I fell in love with Raffe was his unexpected condolence after Penryn had to give up the wheelchair - after all his insistences that it was a futile mission, when he knew she needed it most, he simply said:"You still have her chocolate, the rest is just logistics"
Love these characters and Ee's subtle and beautiful character development :)
