153021 Cynthia - It depends on the book and the genre. You just have to pick and choose what you feel like reading! Usually members will respond if they are interested in the book so that will give you an idea on how much participation to expect. Also, we are only one week into the year so there’s not too much discussion yet and the group reads are just starting.

153021 Cynthia - I appreciate your dilemma with choices! My suggestion is to look through the threads and see what books/authors appeal most to you. All of the threads will get some discussion. (It’s the rare occasion to not.) For 2024, I listed the books, by month and quarter, that I want to read the most in this group plus my library book club reads and made a reading calendar. I doubt that I will get to all of them but I figured it’s a good way for me to plan ahead and help me make decisions.

153021 Ewa - I don’t know if there is an audiobook edition. I didn’t see one listed on the GR editions.

153021 Lesle - It really is an amazing view! I have a great view from my house but my dad, who lives above the river, has a view of the Rio Grande and the mountains. Whenever I drive up there, I just think Wow! It’s a much more dramatic view which I never get tired of! It’s especially pretty when the sand bars in the river and the cacti are covered in snow!

153021 Glad you will be joining us Guillermo!

153021 We had snow Thursday but not much at my house. Maybe .5 inch. My dad says he had 1/16 of an inch. 😂 We measure our precipitation in decimals here! The mountains are covered in snow, though, and look beautiful!

153021 My ILL copy just came in and I’m going to start reading today! It should be a quick read since it’s only 140 pages.

153021 I started I Am a Cat by Natsume Sōseki. I love it so far! I gave my dad the paperback edition and I'm reading the eBook. After I finish it, I am going to read the manga edition.

153021 It’s officially 2024 here in NM so Happy New Years everyone! People are shooting off fireworks like crazy!

153021 Awesome! Glad to hear you will be joining in the discussion Lorraine. My library book is coming from the University of NM and they are closed during the winter break so that’s why it’s taking so long!

153021 Samantha - I’ve tried reducing my TBR but I add to it faster than I delete! At this point, I feel like it’s not worth the effort. I read more contemporary books than classics so I’m always adding new books. What’s more helpful to me is a TBR for the year so I started doing that and then deleting the shelf at the end of the year.

153021 Samantha - I’m also on Storygraph but have no one following me and I’m following 3 random people. What’s your username? I’ll follow you. Mine is bluegrasspam. I like their graphing feature and the community challenges you can join (or create). I didn’t import my GR data though so I only have my most recent reads (past year). I didn’t want to bring over a 4,000+ TBR! I’m starting it from scratch and just adding books I think I will read in the near future.

I hope everyone has a wonderful last day of the year! Cheers!

153021 I squeezed in one last read - the short story The Garden of Forking Paths by Jorge Luis Borges. I liked it but it was very unusual. I did a little research to make sure I understood it. I see it referred to as post-modernism literature, which I’m not very familiar with and not entirely sure of what it even means. I will probably read a few more of Borges’ stories in 2024.
153021 I’m looking forward to reading this one!

153021 I read that the French usher in the New Year with a stack of pancakes. That’s one tradition I’m up for! I don’t cook much but I like making pancakes. I also like the idea of cleaning out the old and welcoming in the new. I have one area of the house that I plan to clean up and organize this weekend. I might even start tonight. I will feel so good when this task is done!

153021 Kathy - Glad to see you will be joining in!

Ewa- The book is available on Open Library, which is a free library archive. I haven’t used it but others in the group have mentioned it.

153021 Get well soon Lesle! Hope everyone has an enjoyable and healthy last few days of the year! And then, we get to start our 2024 reading challenges plus our exercise programs and healthy diets, etc.! 😂 My daughters gave me a scooter for Christmas, which is what I wanted, so I can ride with my youngest grandson. It’s more tiring than I expected but it’s fun and easy to ride. I’ve got to build up my leg muscles, though. It’s a lot different than walking!

Great! I have to wait for my library hold to come in but, hopefully, it will be in soon!
